The NHL offseason already had the potential to be chaotic, but few expected one of the league’s longest-serving captains to become the center of attention.
According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has requested a trade, sending shockwaves throughout the hockey world. While the reasons behind the request remain unclear, Friedman noted that Detroit’s inability to return to the playoffs and a reportedly strained relationship between Larkin and the organization’s leadership could be contributing factors.
The reality is that a player of Larkin’s caliber rarely becomes available. The 29-year-old center remains one of the NHL’s most complete players, capable of producing offensively while playing in all situations. He is also signed long-term and possesses a full no-movement clause, meaning he controls where he ultimately ends up.
If Detroit decides to honor his request, several teams immediately stand out as potential destinations.
Minnesota Wild Could Be the Front Runner
The Minnesota Wild may be the team that makes the most sense.
For years, the Wild have searched for a legitimate first-line center to complement superstar Kirill Kaprizov. While Joel Eriksson Ek is one of the league’s better two-way forwards, Larkin would immediately give Minnesota another dynamic offensive threat down the middle.
The Wild are also entering a period of increased financial flexibility after years of navigating buyout penalties. Combined with a strong prospect pool and several attractive young assets, Minnesota has the pieces necessary to put together a package that could interest Steve Yzerman.
Most importantly, the Wild are a playoff team looking to take the next step, something that could appeal to Larkin.
New Jersey Devils Have the Assets
The New Jersey Devils are another team worth watching.
With Jack Hughes already established as one of the NHL’s elite centers, adding Larkin would give New Jersey arguably the deepest center group in the Eastern Conference. The most intriguing possibility would be whether Nico Hischier becomes part of any discussions.
A deal involving Hischier would certainly capture Detroit’s attention. The Devils have the young talent, prospects, and draft capital necessary to make a serious offer, while Larkin would immediately strengthen a team with Stanley Cup aspirations.
If New Jersey believes its championship window is open right now, this is exactly the type of move management could pursue.
Buffalo Sabres Could Finally Cash In
Buffalo has spent years accumulating young talent and draft picks. At some point, those assets need to be converted into proven NHL players.
The Sabres possess one of the deepest prospect pools in hockey and could offer Detroit a package built around multiple young players. Buffalo’s emerging core, led by Tage Thompson, Owen Power, and Rasmus Dahlin, could make the organization attractive to a player looking for a fresh start.
Whether Buffalo is high on Larkin’s list remains unknown, but they have the assets to be a major player in any negotiations.
Oilers Are the Dark Horse
The Edmonton Oilers may not have the prospect capital of Minnesota, New Jersey, or Buffalo, but they remain an intriguing dark horse. Larkin and Zach Hyman were teammates at the University of Michigan and reportedly roommates during their time there. That connection could make Edmonton a destination Larkin would consider if winning is his top priority.
On the ice, the fit is obvious. Adding Larkin behind Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl would create arguably the strongest center depth in the NHL. The challenge is whether the Oilers can assemble a package that satisfies Detroit. Edmonton’s prospect pool is relatively thin, and draft capital is limited. Unless a creative multi-team trade is involved, matching Detroit’s asking price could be difficult.
Still, with a full no-movement clause, Larkin ultimately controls the process. If he truly wants out of Detroit, the teams he is willing to join will become the teams that matter most. As the draft approaches, Minnesota, New Jersey, Buffalo, and Edmonton could all find themselves in the middle of what may become the biggest trade story of the summer.
