171 – 3rd highest score by an Indian batter on Test debut
Making his Test debut in Dominica against West Indies in 2023, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a scintillating 387-ball 171 in India’s first innings and this helped the visitors win by an innings and 141 runs. With this knock, the left-hander became third highest run-scorer on Test debut, only behind Shikhar Dhawan’s 187 & Rohit Sharma’s 177. This is also the joint 9th highest Test score by any batter in a debut innings in the format. Find out the list who have scored double century on their Test debut here.
12 – Joint most sixes in a Test innings
We don’t associate a Test innings with number of sixes being hit, since it is an attritional format, unlike the T20Is. However, there are players who like to be aggressive even in the red-ball cricket, taking the attack to the opposition and one such batter is India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal
During his stunning knock of 214 against England at Rajkot in early 2024, Jaiswal struck a whopping 12 sixes and thus by sitting at the top of peril in terms of number of sixes in a single Test innings. He is there alongside Wasim Akram who also has hit the same number of maximums in his knock of 257 against Zimbabwe in 1996. Find out Wasim Akram’s incredible records in this blog.
714 – Third most number of runs in a Test series by an Indian
Jaiswal was on sky high after a rollicking Test debut against West Indies away from home and this propelled his case for being a long-term Test opening batter for India. The left-hander didn’t disappoint as in his very first home Test series, he produced a performance for ages.
It was a long gruelling series against England where India hosted them for five matches. Jaiswal opened the innings alongside Rohit and was in some touch throughout these five games. In the opening game at Hyderabad, he made 80 in the first innings before scoring 2 double tons in consecutive games at Vishakhapatnam (209) & Rajkot (214) respectively. He then backed his scores with 2 more half-centuries in the last 2 games at Ranchi and Dharamsala, which brought his total to 714.
His tally is only surpassed by Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar, who has scored 774 (1970/71 series) and 732 (1978/79 series), both against West Indies. This blog will fetch you the top ten instances where an Indian batter accumulated the most number of runs in a bilateral Test series and this, the overall list.
2 – Joint most double centuries by an Indian in single Test series
In the Test series against England, Jaiswal hammered two double and thus joined club of Indian batters with more than 1 double century in a single Test series. The other two are Virat Kohli who scored two double centuries in a 3-match Test series against Sri Lanka in 2016, and Vinoo Mankad who also crossed 200 twice in the 1955/56 home series against New Zealand. Find out all Virat Kohli Test double centuries in this blog.
There have 16 other instances of a batter scoring double century in a series more than once. Sir Don Bradman is only one with 3 double tons in a single series (1930 Ashes against England). He also leads the pack with 4 appearances, while Wally Hammond and Michael Clarke have done on two occasions each. You can reach out to Don Bradman’s insane Test achievements here.
1000 – Second fastest Indian batter to cross 1000 runs in Test cricket
During his 9th Test match for Team India, Jaiswal completed a massive personal milestone of reaching 1000 Test runs. He did so in just 16 innings, making him the second quickest to achieve this feat after Vinod Kambli who took only 14 innings. This is also the joint fourth lowest innings any batter in Test history took to complete 1000 runs in the format.
