There was a time when players used to deal with bowlers in fours only, but later after the induction of T20 cricket batsmen became aggressive and began to hit sixes very often in the One Day Internationals also. Shahid Afridi
Former Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi has smashed the most sixes in ODIs, 351 sixes in 398 ODI matches. Afridi served Pakistan for 19 long years (1995-2015). With an average of 23.57, Shahid has made 8064 runs. Along with the most number of sixes, Afridi has hit 730 fours also.
Chris Gayle
The swashbuckling opener from Jamaica, Chris Gayle has hit 331 sixes in the ODI format, the 2nd most sixes in the ODI. Gayle has played 301 ODIs and scored 10480 runs with a commendable average of 37.83. Gayle is known for attacking the ball from the beginning in international cricket. Gayle’s highest score was 215 off 147 balls against Zimbabwe, which came in the ICC 2015 World Cup. The 41-year-old was a part of the 2004 Champions Trophy-winning team.
Rohit Sharma
Current Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma has smacked the 3rd most number of sixes (330) in the ODI format. Rohit has notched up 10831 runs in 264 ODI matches with an impressive average of 49.23. Rohit Sharma’s 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, is the highest score by any batsman in ODI cricket history.
Sanath Jayasuriya
Former Srilankan swashbuckling opener Sanath Jayasuriya comes at no 4 in terms of hitting sixes in ODI, 270 sixes in 445 ODI matches. Jayasuriya has amassed 13430 runs with a good average of 32.36. His 13430 runs are the 4th highest by a batsman in ODIs. Sanath has also smashed 1500 fours in ODI cricket, which is also the 2nd highest in One Day format.
MS Dhoni
Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni occupies the 5th spot in the matter of smashing sixes, 229 sixes in 350 matches. Mahi has amassed 10773 runs with an incredible average of 50.57. MS is the only lower-order batsman in the world with an average of over 50 in ODIs. MS Dhoni is famous as the best finisher in the world. Dhoni has hit 826 fours too in his career.
Eoin Morgan
Current English limited over format captain Eoin Morgan has struck the 6th most number of sixes (220) in ODI cricket history. Morgan has so far played 246 ODI matches for England and scored 7701 runs with an average of 39.69. Morgan is one of the best hitters of the ball lately. He led the England team to win the 2019 World Cup. The southpaw hit 17 sixes in his 148 runs innings against Afghanistan in the 2019 World Cup, which is the highest by any batter in an ODI inning.
AB DE Villiers
AB DE Villiers gets the 7th position on the list of having the most sixes in ODIs, with 204 sixes in 228 matches. Known as “Mr 360” for his ability to play shots all around the park. He has made 9577 runs with a captivating average of 53.50. De Villiers also holds the record of hitting the fastest 50, 100, and 150 in One Day internationals.
Brendon McCullum
Ex-Kiwi wicket-keeper batsman Brendon McCullum has smashed the 8th most number of sixes in ODIs, 200 sixes in 260 matches. McCullum has scored 6083 runs with a decent average of 30.41. Brendon McCullum has also hit the most number of sixes in tests (107).
Sachin Tendulkar
The highest run-scorer in ODI cricket Sachin Tendulkar has also made it to the tally of most sixes in ODI, 195 in 463 ODI matches. Sachin has whacked 18426 runs with a wow average of 44.83. The most important thing about Sachin is he scored against great bowlers like Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath, Waqar Younis, Courtney Walsh, Shane Warne, etc. Sachin has also hit 2016 fours in his ODI career, which is the highest by any batsman in ODI cricket.
Sourav Ganguly
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has smashed 190 sixes in ODI cricket. In his 15 years career (1992-2007) Ganguly made 11363 runs in 311 matches with an average of 41.02. Dada is the first Indian captain to win the Champions Trophy in 2002. Ganguly is the man who changed the face of Indian cricket during the tough time India was going through in 2000.
