West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has announced his retirement from international cricket, ending a 12-year career that began in 2012. The 36-year-old Trinidadian played 59 Tests, 25 ODIs, and two T20Is, taking a total of 202 wickets for the West Indies.

Career Highlights and Achievements

Gabriel was known for his ability to generate significant pace and bounce, which made him a formidable force in Test cricket. He achieved his best match figures of 13 for 121 against Sri Lanka in June 2018, which is the fourth-best performance by a West Indian in Tests. His height and strength allowed him to bowl effectively even on lifeless pitches, drawing comparisons to West Indies fast bowling legends like Patrick Patterson and Ian Bishop by Courtney Walsh.

Gabriel’s career also featured memorable moments, such as his participation in West Indies’ famous victory over England at Headingley in 2017. Additionally, Gabriel was known for his crucial batting in tight situations, such as in a Test match against Pakistan in Dominica, where his decision to attempt a big shot with seven balls left ultimately cost West Indies the match, though this moment did not overshadow his impressive bowling achievements.

Off-Field Controversies

Gabriel’s career was not without controversy. In 2019, he was banned for four ODIs after making an apparently homophobic remark to England captain Joe Root. Gabriel accepted the sanction and apologized for his behavior, but later suggested that the incident was blown out of proportion.

Post-Retirement Plans

Despite retiring from international cricket, Gabriel has expressed his intention to continue playing domestic cricket for Trinidad and Tobago and participate in various franchise leagues worldwide. He remains passionate about the game and plans to carry on representing his country, club, and franchise teams with the same dedication and love that marked his international career.

West Indies Fast Bowler Gabriel’s Farewell Message

In his farewell message on Instagram, Gabriel expressed his gratitude to God, Cricket West Indies administrators, coaches, staff, teammates, and fans for their support throughout his career. He acknowledged that while it was difficult to say goodbye, he is thankful for the opportunities and experiences he has had playing for the West Indies.

“During the past 12 years,” Gabriel said on Instagram on Wednesday, “I have dedicated myself to playing international cricket for the West Indies. Playing this beloved game at the highest level has brought me immense joy, but as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Today, I am announcing my retirement from International cricket.

“Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to God for the numerous blessings and the opportunities my family and I have received during my time playing for the West Indies. Secondly, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Cricket West Indies administrators, coaches, and staff members. Words cannot adequately convey the appreciation I have for your hard work and support over the years. Last but not least, I am grateful to my teammates and all those who have stood by me and supported me along the way. You have made my journey to the top truly special.

“Moving forward, my plan is to continue representing my country [Trinidad and Tobago], club, and franchise teams around the world with the same love and passion I have shown throughout my career.”

Gabriel last played for the West Indies in July 2023 but remains active in domestic competitions and various T20 leagues, including the Abu Dhabi T10. His decision to retire from international cricket marks the end of an era for a player who was a key figure in West Indies’ fast-bowling attack over the last decade.
