Roman Reigns Says Wrestling Would Have ‘Missing Gaps’ Without His Family

Roman Reigns is putting his family’s impact on wrestling into perspective—and making it clear just how much of the industry traces back to that lineage.

While speaking to Nico Leonard, Roman Reigns reflected on the Anoa’i family tree and how deeply rooted it is in wrestling history, explaining how it all started and expanded across generations.

“I mean, we have the largest family tree—it’s crazy when you look at it. It started with my dad and my uncle, and then from there multiple generations of cousins, first cousins that were in it, and then eventually me and my generation.”

When the conversation shifted toward Dwayne Johnson, Reigns made it clear that while the connection may seem separate on the surface, the bond between their families runs deep: “Yeah. Well, he’s like another extension of the family as well, where it all forms into one family tree.” He then provided more context on that relationship, explaining how the connection existed long before either family made it big in wrestling.

“Well, some kind of—but also his grandfather was best friends with my grandfather, and then also one of my uncles as well. So our families, even before the business, were very tight—very close.”

Reigns went further back into the history, pointing to how Peter Maivia played a major role in shaping his own family’s path in wrestling. When asked how different wrestling would look without his family’s influence, Reigns admitted the industry would still exist—but not without noticeable gaps.

“Dwayne’s grandfather, the High Chief Peter Maivia—he’s the one that mentored my father and my uncle and taught them the ropes of the business. And from there it just completely bonded our families, and the history’s there. I think it would still be close to where it’s at, but you would have a couple missing gaps. There would have to be people to replace my family—and then also just Dwayne in general. It would take a lot to fill those voids for sure.”

He then singled out The Rock’s rise as something truly unmatched, stating how rare his trajectory was. Reigns wrapped it up by explaining why he believes that kind of transition will never be replicated.

“Especially what he’s done—it’s unspoken. Nobody ever hit the scene like Dwayne did and then was able to just move on to the next thing. To be able to keep it there like that—that was perfect. Three or four years of perfection, and then to smoothly transition to the big screen. No one will ever do that. It’ll never happen again.”

Bottom line—Reigns isn’t just talking about family pride here. He’s making it clear that without names like The Rock and the Anoa’i lineage, wrestling would look very different—and replacing that kind of influence isn’t something that happens twice.

Do you think Roman Reigns is right about The Rock’s run being impossible to replicate, or could someone eventually match that level of success? Let us know your take.
