Xabi Alonso’s “Future lies at Anfield” Claim Spanish Reports

Xabi Alonso’s “Future lies at Anfield” Claim Spanish Reports

Xabi Alonso remains heavily linked to Liverpool amid Arne Slot‘s struggles and his current unemployment, with reports from Spain expecting the former Red to land at Anfield.

There have been no shortage of reports, primarily from the continent, linking Alonso to Liverpool, and another has emerged from Spain this week.

According to Diario AS‘s editor-in-chief, Aritz Gabilondo, “there are no doubts” that Alonso’s “future lies at Anfield.”

Liverpool are said to be the club “pushing his name most strongly,” with the consensus among the top European clubs that the 44-year-old was not solely at fault for the issues at Real Madrid.

Despite pushback from his players, Alonso left the Spanish capital with 24 wins, six defeats and four draws, for a win rate of 70.5 percent.

His successor, former Liverpool teammate, Alvaro Arbeloa, has since won 13, lost six and drawn one since taking over in January, but has seen his side fall nine points behind Barcelona in La Liga and exit the Copa del Rey at the hands of a second division side.

The AS report went on to state “there are top clubs still interested” in Alonso, but the opportunity for Liverpool is described as a “golden” one.

This is due to Enzo Maresca being deemed the “chosen one” to replace Pep Guardiola at Man City, while Vincent Kompany is performing strongly at Bayern Munich.

The report follows on from one in Germany that stated Alonso is “ready” to move to Anfield if they were to make a suitable offer, and it stands to reason they would not peddle a narrative if there were not some truth behind it.

Conflicting Arne Slot sacking reports

Any potential move for Alonso, however, all rests on what Liverpool’s owners decide over Slot’s future, to which there have been conflicting reports.

Those in England insist FSG are planning to stick with the Dutchman, but, as noted above, it is not the same story on the continent.

According to the Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace, “the consensus is that Slot deserves to start next season,” with the feeling “that he deserves four transfer windows before a judgment is made.”

BILD‘s Axel Hesse, meanwhile, a source deemed close to Alonso from his time in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, claimed “a change of manager is expected” and the Spaniard is their “top candidate.”

ARNE SLOT: LIVERPOOL WIN RATE BY SEASON

2024/25 2025/26 Overall
68% 52% 60.4%

Arne Slot‘s win rate (60 percent from 106 games) recently dropped below Jurgen Klopp‘s record (62 percent from 491 games).

The sources for their respective information will be starkly different, and it will be surprising to few that Liverpool would play down reports of a managerial change during the season.

The Reds created a timely buffer in their pursuit of Champions League qualification for next season over the weekend, and see their current fate rest in overturning a 2-0 deficit against PSG.

The messaging has been consistent, that a review will take place at the end of the season, but reports from Spain and Germany have little to gain by peddling a false narrative.
