Chris Johnson NFL Draft Profile

The 2026 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Chris Johnson NFL Draft Profile.

Chris Johnson Background

Position: Cornerback

School:
San Diego State

Size:
6-foot, 193 pounds

Class: Senior

2025 stats:
49 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 4 interceptions, 9 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, 2 touchdowns

Johnson was a three-star recruit who signed with the Aztecs to stay in-state in the class of 2022. He didn’t play much as a freshman, registering just six total tackles. In 2023, he made an impact as a backup and on special teams, but finished with 40 total tackles, one interception and one pass defended. He started in 2024, registering 67 total tackles, one interception and four passes defended. SDSU struggled despite Johnson’s good play, as they had just three wins. In 2025, Johnson racked up 49 tackles, four interceptions and nine passes defended. He led the Aztecs to a better season with them winning nine contests.

Following the season, Johnson has been preparing for the 2026 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a day two pick.

Chris Johnson Strengths

Johnson is specifically effective in zone coverage, but can also play man-to-man. In zone coverage, he has good eye balance and sees the field clearly. He reads the quarterback well and puts himself in position. In man-to-man, Johnson is able to mirror receivers well and doesn’t allow much separation.

He has solid ball skills and had a decent amount of ball production during his time at San Diego State. Johnson tracks the ball well in the air and then puts himself in position. He attacks the catch point well, with the ability to defend passes and intercept them. When the ball is in his hands, he is a threat to return it for a touchdown.

For the position, Johnson is a good athlete. He ran a 4.4-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and also had a vertical jump of 38 inches. This athleticism shows up on tape. Johnson has good quickness at the start of plays and agility to mirror receivers well. He also has good long speed, although sometimes it is tough for him to show a recovery burst.

Chris Johnson Weaknesses

Johnson doesn’t have the best measurables for the position. He stands at 6-foot and 193 pounds, so he needs to fill out his frame a bit more. Adding play strength can allow him to play more physically. He also has shorter arms, as his arms measure in under 31 inches. He misses out on some plays because of his length.

He can struggle to match up with bigger receivers, as they have large catch radii and Johnson can’t match that. Johnson could also be more physical with added strength to match with the bigger receivers throughout routes.

His run defense is not going to shock anyone. He struggles to shed blocks and get through traffic to pursue the football. Johnson also struggles to make consistent form tackles on ball carriers.

Projected Draft Range: Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick

Draft Grade: Second Round Pick
