The Miami Grand Prix represents a pivotal moment in Ferrari’s 2026 Formula 1 campaign. The updates introduced on the SF-26 are not just routine developments, but a true benchmark to understand whether the Scuderia can realistically fight for the world championship or if it will once again remain in pursuit of its rivals.

Ferrari, Miami is already a turning point

Miami is not just another race on the calendar. For Ferrari, it is already a technical and strategic crossroads. The expected upgrades on the SF-26 represent far more than a standard development step: they are a concrete test of the direction taken by the Maranello-based team.

At this stage of the season, the margin for error is virtually zero. Immediate and tangible answers are required, with no more room left for interpretation, optimism, or unproven promises.

A solid foundation, but not enough for a title fight

The SF-26 has clearly shown competitive traits. The car is well balanced through corners, with a stable and predictable aerodynamic platform. However, in modern Formula 1, being strong in isolated areas is not sufficient.

To win a world championship, overall excellence is required across every performance area. And it is precisely here that Ferrari’s limitations begin to emerge.

Rear instability: an advantage for Charles Leclerc, a limitation for Lewis Hamilton

One of the main weaknesses remains the behaviour of the rear end of the car. This is a characteristic that Charles Leclerc is able to exploit, pushing the car beyond its limits and transforming instability into useful rotation.

The situation is different for Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion suffers from lower confidence in the car, which directly affects consistency and overall performance. In a tightly contested championship, this inevitably translates into lost points.

The key issue: energy management

However, the most significant problem is structural: energy management. Ferrari is currently behind Mercedes-powered teams, not so much in peak power, but in how that power is deployed.

Energy recovery, deployment phases, and overall efficiency are now decisive factors in modern Formula 1. These are the areas where races are effectively won and lost, and the SF-26 deficit risks neutralising even the impact of aerodynamic upgrades.

ADUO project and tight development timeline

At Maranello, attention is already shifting towards June, when an evolution of the power unit linked to the ADUO project is expected to arrive. However, the real challenge is arriving at that point still connected to the leading group.

If the Miami upgrade package fails to deliver, the risk becomes very real: losing contact in the championship standings. And in Formula 1, once that gap opens, recovering becomes extremely difficult.

Rain performance and aerodynamic uncertainty

Another major question mark concerns performance in wet conditions. Top-tier cars are usually strong in mixed conditions, but the SF-26 has not yet provided convincing answers in this area.

This raises further doubts about the true aerodynamic load of the car, particularly the type of downforce that is most effective in low-grip or changing conditions.

Tyre management remains Ferrari’s strongest asset

The most positive aspect so far remains tyre management. In hot conditions, Ferrari has shown strong performance in controlling degradation and extending tyre life.

However, a single area of strength is not enough to build a realistic championship-winning package.

Final analysis

Miami represents a technical truth moment for Ferrari. It will reveal whether the SF-26 has the foundations required to fight for the title or whether the team must once again settle into a chasing role.

The SF-26 is a solid Formula 1 car, but a championship campaign requires a complete package: chassis, aerodynamics, power unit, and energy management working in perfect harmony.

Without that balance, even progress risks remaining incomplete. And this time, there are no more excuses left.
