Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Benjamin Afutu Kotey is enjoying a career resurgence in Ethiopia, where he has quickly become a key figure for Ethiopia Insurance SC.
Since joining the club during the second transfer window, the 29-year-old has started all four matches for his new side.
His latest outing was particularly memorable, as he delivered a Man of the Match display to help Ethiopia Insurance secure progression to the semi-finals of the Ethiopian FA Cup.
Afutu’s return to form marks a fresh start after a difficult period following his departure from Hearts of Oak. After helping the Phobians win the league and FA Cup double in 2021, he had spells in Egypt with El Sharkia Lel Dokhan and in Saudi Arabia with Al-Taqadom FC, where game time was limited.
Now settled in Addis Ababa, Afutu has rediscovered his rhythm and influence in the middle of the park. His energy, defensive work rate, and leadership have been instrumental in Ethiopia Insurance’s recent push in both domestic competitions.
If his current form continues, Afutu could soon attract attention from bigger clubs on the continent. For now, he is focused on helping his team chase silverware and cementing his place as one of the steady hands in the Ethiopian Premier League.
