The Madrid Open continues tonight with two decent late second-round matches, as some of the top seeds look to find their footing on the red clay of Spain. Here is a preview and our betting predictions for Medvedev vs Marozsan and Bublik vs Tsitsipas.
Daniil Medvedev vs. Fabian Marozsan
World number 10 Daniil Medvedev enters the tournament looking to bounce back from a disappointing early exit in Monte Carlo where he didn’t look balanced following the double-bagel from Berrettini. While clay has historically been his least favorite surface, Medvedev has improved his dirt-court results significantly over the last few seasons and he has previously reached the Madrid quarterfinals back-to-back. Today, he faces a strong opponent in Fabian Marozsan.
Marozsan has already played a match this week in Madrid, a tough but impressive win over Ethan Quinn, giving him an opportunity to adjust to the unique high-altitude conditions of the Caja Magica. The Hungarian’s variety and heavy groundstrokes can be disruptive, but Medvedev’s defensive consistency usually makes him a heavy favorite at betting sites against players outside the top tier. The match is scheduled for the Arantxa Sanchez Stadium, not before 7:00 PM local time.
Predictions: Medvedev is tough to predict as his form and performances are quite volatile but we know what level he can reach. This will be a tough test against Marozsan but I bet on the Russian to grind him down in 3 sets. He won all of their three previous meetings and has a decent history here in Madrid. Also, Marozsan does not have a great record against top ranked players recently.
Alexander Bublik vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas
Over on the Manolo Santana Centre Court, Alexander Bublik takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas in a clash of contrasting styles. Bublik, the eighth seed, is known for his unpredictable playstyle, including underarm serves and aggressive shot-making. While he is often seen as a wildcard on clay, the faster conditions in Madrid actually suit his big serve and flat hitting better than traditional European clay courts.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is aiming to regain his best form after a disappointing start to the season. The Greek star is a former finalist in Madrid and generally thrives on clay, where his heavy topspin and one-handed backhand have more time to dictate play.
His form is not great though and we’ve seen him fallen in the ranks quite heavily. Bublik on the other side is just outside the top 10 and has stepped up his game in the last year.
Predictions: These two players haven’t met since 2020 when Tsitsipas won both meetings. Today it looks very different though and Bublik are the stronger player at the moment. His serve should work great in these conditions. Bublik to win in two tight sets.
