Free this weekend: Anno 117 and several Steam gifts are currently available for free

We’re going over which games are available for free this weekend. Whether they’re just temporarily free or actual gifts.

You made it! You’ve survived another workweek, and the weekend is waiting. As the cherry on top, we’re recommending several games that you can currently play for free, just as we always do.

And this time, you’ve got an amazingly good selection. Especially if you love strategy games. As always, in this article we’re not just listing games that are free for a few days, but also titles that are currently being given away for free—so you can keep them forever.

1. Highlight: Anno 117

  • Release: November 12, 2025
  • Genre: Building strategy
  • Play for free until: April 27, 2:00 PM

The first major DLC for Anno 117: Pax Romana was actually supposed to be released on April 23, but the release fell through. To make the extra wait a little less painful, Ubisoft has announced a free weekend for Anno 117. This lets you try out one of the best city-building games of recent times completely free for a few days and build your own island empire within the Roman Empire.

Unlike the Anno 117 demo, the free version isn’t tied to a timer. So you can play the entire game. If you stick with it, you might even be able to complete the campaign over the weekend and build some truly magnificent cities.

2nd Highlight: Age of Mythology Retold

  • Release: September 4, 2024
  • Genre: Real-time strategy
  • Play for free until: April 27, 7:00 PM

Even the remakes of Age of Empires were among the best remakes you can find. The mythology spin-offAge of Mythologyis no exception. With Retold, you get a wonderfully modernized version of a true classic and can wage epic battles between different pantheons of gods from human history.

On top of that, Age of Mythology offers an exciting campaign with wonderfully varied missions in which you lead the Egyptians, Greeks, or Vikings to victory. If you want to play through the campaign in three days, you’ll have to really buckle down—but it’s not entirely impossible.
