Canucks, Maple Leafs & Canadiens

This edition of Canadian Teams Daily Rumours includes three quick rumours you need to know. The Canucks are apparently sniffing around Cody McCarron to add some grit to the bottom six. He’s a right-shot, faceoff-winning, physical centre who would steady the kids for maybe $3.5–4M.

The Maple Leafs tried to ask the Lightning for permission to interview Julien BriseBois for their GM search, and Tampa slammed the door, as expected. And Montreal might get Noah Dobson back for a huge Game 7-type moment: he’s been out with an upper-body injury but looked close to returning, which would be a real boost for their defence.

Canucks Rumour: Is Vancouver Eyeing a McCarron Muscle-Up?

Looks like Vancouver might be ready to add some bite to their bottom six. There’s chatter that the Canucks could make a real push for Cody McCarron in free agency. He’s a right-shot, physical centre who wins faceoffs and kills plays defensively — just the kind of veteran presence the young Canucks could use along the boards and in tight situations.

Think of him like a Kiefer Sherwood-type plug: not going to light up the scoresheet, but brings grit, space-closing, and penalty-kill reliability. Reports suggest a deal in the neighbourhood of $3.5–4M AAV, which would be a noticeable investment but could help steady Vancouver’s lineup while the youngsters continue to develop.

Maple Leafs Rumour: Toronto Inquire About BriseBois: Tampa Bay Shuts the Door

The Maple Leafs tried to make a move and asked Tampa if they could chat with Julien BriseBois about their GM search. It was a bold move, but not illogical. Elliotte Friedman dropped it on 32 Thoughts, saying Toronto had asked permission to speak to a current GM, and that it was BriseBois.

No surprise here: Tampa said no. He’s been with the Lightning forever, built that organization, and there’s zero reason for them to let him walk right now. Active GMs are usually off-limits anyway, but teams will still test the waters. I can imagine that BriseBois was asked and said no.

Even if BriseBois ever wanted a change, this wasn’t the moment. Tampa shutting the door makes sense. The Maple Leafs took their shot, got denied, and now continue the search elsewhere.

The Maple Leafs asked to speak to BriseBois, but the Lightning said no.

Canadiens Rumour: Dobson Could Be Back — Big Boost for Habs

With the Canadiens series against the Lightning going to Game 7, getting Noah Dobson back would be a boost for Montreal. He finished the season with 47 points and was playing over 22 minutes a night, so he matters. He’s been out since April 11 with an upper-body injury, missed the first six games, but looks like he might return.

Nothing is official, but reports suggested he was 50/50 for Game 6 and looked close, so it’s fair to expect he might suit up Sunday. If he plays, Montreal’s defence and transition game suddenly looks far more stable — exactly the kind of lift they need with their season on the line.
