Adam Scott Owns a Rare Wrong Ball Penalty at Doral

Adam Scott’s opening round at the Cadillac Championship took an unexpected turn when the Australian veteran made one of the rarest mistakes in professional golf, striking the wrong ball from the rough at Doral’s par‑5 eighth hole.

The two‑stroke penalty was applied without argument and immediately reshaped Scott’s week at the PGA Tour’s revived Blue Monster stop.

“It’s such a silly thing to do,” Scott said afterwards, admitting it was the first time in his career he had made the error. “That’s probably one of those things everyone ends up doing once. But an odd set of circumstances led to me not checking it, which I think I’ve done thousands of times.”

The cost was immediate and hard to ignore. “To take two lumps there is tough, especially when you’re sitting here on the weekend thinking if you’re two better you’d be doing so well in the tournament,” he said.

What followed said more about Scott than the mistake itself. Rather than spiralling, he steadied himself, absorbed the damage, and reset.

“Golf can be cruel at times, and I’ve experienced plenty of other tough things on the course,” Scott said. “You just have to get on with it and do the best you can. Luckily it was early in the round and I had time to try and salvage something out of it.”

Scott managed to put it all out of his mind and produced some stunning golf across the weekend. Rounds of 66 and 64 catapulted Scott into the top-5, finishing 8 strokes behind the winner Cameron Young.
