Keys to the offseason for the Calgary Flames
Ryan S. Clarke and Kristen Shelton of ESPN: Looking at the keys to the offseason for the Calgary Flames.
Projected cap space: $19 million
2026 draft picks: 1st, 1st (VGK), 2nd, 2nd (NYR), 2nd (UTA), 2nd (OTT), 3rd, 3rd (VAN), 4th, 5th, 6th
The Flames will look at some of their veteran players and see where they fit going forward. Forward Jonathan Huberdeau has only hit 60 points in one of his four seasons with the Flames, and he has four years left at a $10.5 million cap hit.
Blake Coleman, Morgan Frost, and Ryan Strome are all entering the final year of their contract. Strome is the most expensive of that group, and he’s only at $5 million. They could look at getting some more future assets, draft picks or prospects, one or all.
The Boston Bruins Will Need Scoring Help Regardless
Could the Oilers send Tristan Jarry to the AHL, areas of need, and some pending UFAs who could be back
The Fourth Period: The Edmonton Oilers management will be looking this offseason at how to get them back to serious contenders next year. They’ll have around $16.5 million in projected cap space to do so.
David Pagnotta wondered on the weekend on the Hello Hockey podcast about sending Tristan Jarry to the AHL and freeing up $1.225 million as opposed to buying him out, which would create less cap space.
They’ll have to make decisions on pending UFAs goalie Connor Ingram, defenceman Connor Murphy, and forwards Adam Henrique, Jason Dickinson, Jack Roslovic, Kasperi Kapanen, Max Jones and Curtis Lazar. The Oilers are expected to look at re-signing Ingram, Dickinson and Murphy.
Is the Window Closing to Keep Connor McDavid in Edmonton?
The Oilers will need to figure out their goaltending this offseason, and address their bottom-six/third-line center. Dickinson would fill the third-line center if they re-sign him. They could also use a top-six winger, and a rugged, defensive-minded defenseman.
They’ll also need to make a decision on head coach Kris Knoblauch.
