In today’s (May 9) Canadian Rumours roundup, I’m looking at three stories making noise around the league right now. The Maple Leafs’ draft lottery win didn’t suddenly calm Auston Matthews about Toronto’s bigger issues. The Flames are doing their usual “work the list” approach with 11 draft picks and don’t appear ready to change course. And the Oilers continue getting linked to assistant coach Jessica Campbell as a fresh voice who might help stabilize things long term.
Maple Leafs Rumour: Lottery Win Didn’t Flip Matthews’ Switch
The Maple Leafs snagging the No. 1 pick looks huge on paper, but insiders say Auston Matthews isn’t suddenly emotional about his future. He’s still taking a hard look at the bigger picture. Greg Wyshynski told Jeff Marek he checked around and that the draft win hasn’t really changed Matthews’ mindset heading into the offseason.
Toronto’s mess of a season — a 32-36-14 record, missed playoffs, a GM fired, and Matthews injured — means this isn’t just about one lucky draw. Matthews supposedly wants to see a clear plan and real moves, not PR fixes, before he makes any long-term decision.
Flames Rumour: Sticking to the List — Draft Day Moves to Watch
Feels like Flames draft day is more of a routine than a panic room. Since Jay Feaster took over in 2011, Calgary’s been all about “work the list.” Scouts grind through prospects, rank ’em, and mostly pick from that list unless a can’t-miss chance pops up.
That approach netted early hits like Matt Coronato, Sam Honzek, Aydar Suniev, Zayne Parekh and Matvei Gridin, and the later-round gambles (think Dustin Wolf and Ethan Wyttenbach) have paid off too. With better analytics, a bigger scouting crew, and Conroy preaching “build through the draft,” they’ve only doubled down on that method.
Fast-forward to 2026 and the Flames have 11 picks — two firsts, four seconds, two thirds — so it’s a massive haul for a team still growing. Given how they’ve built through steady drafting over the last few years, sliding back a bit in Round 1 isn’t going to suddenly change things. Expect them to mostly run the list, grab BPA when it fits, and pounce on any late-round steals they didn’t see coming.
Oilers Rumour: Could Edmonton Hire Jessica Campbell as a Coach?
The Oilers have had enough do-or-die summers to last a lifetime, and maybe what they need is a fresh pair of eyes. Jessica Campbell’s name popping up is kinda intriguing. It’s not about headlines or being historic; it’s about whether her coaching vibe—good communicator, adaptable, focused on player growth and structure when the heat’s on—could help the team actually evolve instead of just patching things up season to season.
Her hiring won’t magically fix everything. But the fit makes sense on paper: someone who prioritizes development and clarity might help steady a roster that’s been through tons of turnover, injuries, and nonstop pressure. If the Oilers want long-term change rather than another band-aid, bringing in a different perspective, like Campbell’s, is worth discussing.
