The Cincinnati Reds put an end to their losing streak on Saturday. If they win today they’ll have what is called a winning streak and it’s something that they could really use as they’ve gone from 1st place to last place in just over a week’s time. This afternoon they will wrap up a 3-game series at Great American Ball Park against the Houston Astros. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40pm ET.

Starting Pitchers
Andrew Abbott
It’s been a tough start to the 2026 season for Abbott, but he’s turned things around a bit in his last two outings. Facing the Rockies and the Cubs, Abbott has thrown 11.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs in his last two outings. He had allowed 15 earned runs in 11.2 innings in his three starts prior to that.
Left-handed hitters have had a lot of success this season against Abbott, hitting .417 with two home runs in limited time. But over his last two starts they’ve had just two singles and a walk in 10 plate appearances against him. Teams are stacking righties against Abbott and they have had far less success against him compared to lefties. Still, they’ve hit for a solid average, walked nearly as often as they’ve struck out, and made tons of contact against him. Right-handed hitters are not hitting for much power when facing him this season.

Kai-Wei Teng
Much of this season has been spent pitching out of the Astros bullpen for Teng. He made his first start of the year on April 28th and pitched just 3.0 innings. He went back to the bullpen last week and pitched in two games. Don’t expect him too pitch deep into the game today, with his longest outing being 3.0 innings this season where he threw 42 pitches.
Over the last three seasons he’s pitched 63.2 innings, so the splits aren’t all that informative given the sample size being spread out over such a large time frame. Right-handed hitters have walked a lot when facing him and have hit for a solid average. Left-handed hitters walk far less often, strike out just as much, and hit for a lower average. Neither group has hit for much power against him in his career.

News and Notes
Rhett Lowder will go on the injured list
Prior to today’s game manager Terry Francona told the media that Rhett Lowder would go onto the 15-day injured list.
More Edwin Arroyo!
Yesterday in the game preview I wrote in this same space about how well Arroyo had been hitting and linked to a piece I had over at RedsMinorLeagues.com about some of the things he’s been doing (along with being further away from shoulder surgery) that have helped him this year in Triple-A. Then he went out last night and picked up four more hits, with two more doubles. That led to today’s article here at Redleg Nation where I asked the question – is it time to consider calling him up?
