Lorenzo Musetti has endured a torrid 2026 campaign so far. The highs he was so close to achieving have in fact been the foundation of a string of injury woes and early exits. He was defending a lot of points coming into the clay swing, and after losing in the last 16 of the Rome Open to Casper Ruud, he has dropped out of the top just over a year after making his first strides among the world’s elite.
The Italian had the full backing of the crows at Foro Italico but was unable to get anything going on court. Ruud nabbed a late break to seal the first set before continuing his fine form, getting a double-break advantage in the second set.
Musetti was blighted with more injury concerns after taking a medical timeout. He soldiered on, getting his fourth game of the match on the board before losing eight of the last nine points on offer. Ruud confirmed a fifth quarterfinal in Rome while Musetti crashed out on home soil.
Ranking troubles for Musetti
This defeat has consequences surrounding his rankings. Musetti’s clay swing last year was impressive to say the least. He began by reaching the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters, losing to Carlos Alcaraz. Semi-final appearances in the Madrid Open and Rome Open followed. The tournament in the Spanish capital was the place where Musetti debuted in the top 10 after a fine run. His fine form continued to Roland Garros where another semi-final marked the credentials of an extremely talented player.
He knew that this period in 2026 would be crucial, but his preparation beforehand has been all over the place. He was cruelly prevented of a second Grand Slam semi-final Down Under against Novak Djokovic. Leading 2-0 in sets, a sharp pain was felt in his upper right leg, forcing him to retire and relinquishing the chance to gain more points in a tournament he could have left as the world number three.
He missed the entire golden swing before making his return at Indian Wells. It was short lived as he lost in his opening tie. The same was repeated in Monaco as home favourite Valentin Vacherot dealt a major blow to the 24-year-old. He lost in the quarterfinal of the Barcelona Open to eventual champion Arthur Fils ahead of back-to-back last-16 exits in Madrid and Rome, costing him a whole chunk of points.
After the culmination of the Miami Open, in which Musetti did no feature, he was world number five with 4265. Once the Rome Open concludes, he will be outside of the top 10. From this tournament alone, 300 points have been swiped off his tally, leaving him on 3115 points in the
live rankings. At this pace, he will enter Roland Garros ranked 11th in the world.
However, there is time to change it. He will head to the Hamburg Open, an ATP 500 event where he will be hoping to get back on track. He is defending nothing in Germany, a huge boost after the prior Masters 1000 tournaments.
