Asuka may be stepping away from WWE television for now, but a new report makes it clear this situation has nothing to do with roster cuts or contract issues.
After Asuka’s emotional backstage moment with IYO SKY during the May 11 episode of WWE RAW, speculation exploded online that “The Empress of Tomorrow” could be quietly retiring or stepping away permanently. But according to Sean Ross Sapp, the real story is much more personal than fans realized.
Speaking during Fightful’s post-RAW show, Sapp revealed that Asuka’s hiatus has nothing to do with WWE cuts, pay reductions, or TKO contract restructuring. Instead, he said she approached WWE because she needs to handle personal matters back in Japan.
“So, I found out definitively what’s going on. And I don’t want to miscredit the person who said it, but the person who said there’s personal stuff going on—that’s accurate.”
Sapp stressed that WWE did not want Asuka leaving television for an extended period, but respected her situation once she explained what was happening.
“And again, I don’t want to elaborate on what that is, but I was straight up told tonight she was not a part of any cuts. She was not a part of any—she wasn’t asked to take a pay cut. As best I know, WWE did not want Asuka to be gone for a while, so to speak.”
He then explained that Asuka personally informed WWE she needed time away and would likely be spending significant time back in Japan.
“Here’s what I heard: Asuka had approached WWE and said, ‘There’s stuff I’ve got to attend to,’ which we’re not going to elaborate on. It’s back in Japan. She’s going to be spending some time there. I don’t know how much time that’s going to be, but obviously it’s not what WWE wanted to hear. It’s something that they felt was important to honor and all that.”
Sapp also revealed that several people inside WWE immediately pushed back against fan theories that Asuka had been quietly cut or forced into accepting less money under TKO.
“Asuka is beloved in that company. When people naturally were like, ‘Oh, was she cut? Was she asked to take a pay cut?’ a number of people hit me up and they’re like, ‘Man, we can’t speak higher of the job that she does.’”
This completely changes the context surrounding RAW’s emotional segment. During the show, Asuka told IYO SKY she was proud of her and admitted she had been waiting for someone to take her place before walking away carrying a suitcase, creating immediate farewell speculation online.
Michael Cole later added even more mystery by saying Asuka’s WWE status was “up in the air.” Now, it sounds like the situation has far more to do with real-life personal matters than anything else.
Bottom line: Asuka’s emotional RAW moment may have looked like the end, but backstage, WWE still views her as one of the company’s most respected stars — and her current absence appears tied entirely to personal matters in Japan, not any fallout with the company.
Do you think Asuka eventually returns for one more major WWE run, or did RAW feel like the start of her final goodbye? Drop your thoughts below.
