Ronda Rousey is finally revealing just how close WWE came to giving fans the long-awaited singles match against Becky Lynch — and according to Rousey, the entire thing was fully mapped out before it suddenly fell apart.
For years, fans viewed “The Man” vs. “Rowdy” as the biggest women’s singles match WWE never actually delivered. The rivalry originally exploded heading into Survivor Series 2018 before Lynch suffered a concussion during the infamous Raw invasion angle and got pulled from the match entirely.
While the two eventually shared the ring at WrestleMania 35 alongside Charlotte Flair in the historic triple threat main event, WWE never followed up with the one-on-one bout many fans expected afterwards. Now, Rousey says that was never because of her.
During an interview with Sports Illustrated’s The Takedown, Rousey revealed that she put together an extensive presentation outlining exactly how a WrestleMania match with Lynch would work. According to Rousey, the pitch was designed to tell the full story of their rivalry and serve as the definitive ending to their feud.
“After WrestleMania, I literally printed out a whole presentation for them, for me and Becky — the singles match. How we would do it, how we would plan it out and rehearse these things and have them woven throughout the show. To do something really exceptional and new. And then Vince and them were like, ‘oh yeah, this is a great idea, this is great.’ Then I went and had my baby, I came back, and they were like, well, we talked about that a year ago.”
Rousey said the plan was far more ambitious than simply booking a one-on-one match. She envisioned a storyline woven throughout the entire WrestleMania event so that even first-time viewers could understand the history between her and Lynch.
“They said, ‘We love this plan, it’s an epic showdown with you and Becky that’s going to build all year.’ I wanted to make basically a final showdown of me and Becky woven throughout the entirety of the show. It would summarize the entire rivalry for anyone watching it for the first time. Someone could watch it and not need to watch everything that came beforehand. It would sum it up and then deliver the ending. I thought it was f****** incredible and it was why I came back.”
The comments now add even more frustration to what many fans already considered one of WWE’s biggest missed opportunities of the modern era. Because despite the massive chemistry, mainstream attention, and years of anticipation surrounding the feud, Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey as a true WrestleMania singles match never actually happened.
Do you think WWE made a huge mistake by never delivering Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey one-on-one, or did the WrestleMania 35 triple threat already accomplish what it needed to? Leave your thoughts and feedback below.
