TX224: Why One Shoe Shape Was Never Enough

By Hutch & Robert

For decades, cycling shoes have followed a simple formula: build one shape, scale it across sizes, and offer a wider version if needed. While that approach works for some riders, it ignores one important reality, and something that we at Lake have been saying to cyclists and triathletes for over 40 years – not all feet are shaped the same. Ultimately, that’s why we design and create such a variety of cycling shoe models – possibly the most complete range of cycling shoes in the world.

And so, at Lake, the development of the TX224 started with a different question:

What if fit wasn’t just about width, but about matching the actual shape of the foot?

Triathlon is about speed in transition, and having a shoe that matches the foot shape better would be a real bonus. The result is one of the most unique concepts in cycling footwear; a single model of triathlon shoe, but offered in three distinct fit shapes, with each option designed around real-world foot anatomy. Lake is about offering cyclists and triathletes choice and delivering comfort.

This is not simply a narrow, regular, and wide version of the same shoe. NO, that’s too simplistic and wouldn’t deal with the real issue – the shape of the foot. Ultimately, the shoe needs to be secure and wrapped around the foot – your foot. Changing the width alone can never deal with the more complex issue – the shape of your foot.  And with this in mind, we set about looking at a new way of delivering the ultimate in cycling shoe comfort to even more triathletes.

Our TX224 was developed around three genuinely different foot profiles, recognizing that riders experience fit issues for far more reasons than width alone. Let’s examine a few of these critical issues.

Beyond Width: Understanding Foot Shape

Most footwear discussions focus on width, but width is only one part of how a shoe fits. Out there in the real world; in cycling clubs and cafes across the global cycling community, real feet vary in the following ways:

  • Toe shape
  • Forefoot volume
  • Instep height
  • Arch structure
  • Overall foot volume
  • Toe length patterns
  • Heel width

Now, you begin to get the picture. As we say frequently: your feet are unique, and it needs a solution built specifically for your foot shape. Some riders have a more squared off forefoot with evenly aligned toes. Others have a dominant first toe shape, while many riders have a longer second toe creating a more tapered or “V-shaped” profile. These are natural anatomical variations, yet most cycling shoes force all of these feet into a single shape. Cycling shoes, and yes, triathlon shoes can be too narrow for aesthetic reasons, focusing on a sleek look; and yet this mismatch of squeezing your feet into shoes that are the wrong shape – and yes, the wrong width too – can produce a mismatch that often leads to the following:

  • Toe compression
  • Numbness
  • Hot spots
  • Instability
  • Excessive strap tension
  • Riders sizing up to create room where they need it

Don’t tell me, you’ve been there and had one or more of these issues happen to you. It happens in cycling cafes around the world. Once riders stop, too many of them have to loosen their shoes or remove them due to pain and discomfort. And for a performance sport such as triathlon, that can be a serious issue, because ultimately, comfort equals performance. If your cycling shoes feel good, then so do you.

The Lake TX224 triathlon shoe was designed to solve this problem by recognizing that shape matters just as much as size. It’s different, and we believe that it’s one of the top triathlon shoes in the world for fitness, comfort, and performance. It delivers on the points that matter.

Three Distinct ShapesOne Performance Goal.

The TX224 is offered in three separate fit profiles, each developed to better align with commonly found foot shapes and volume demands.

Precision Fit (Race Narrow)

Designed for riders with:

  • Lower volume feet
  • Narrow heel and forefoot dimensions
  • More tapered toe shape requirements

This shape delivers a secure, race-oriented fit with minimal internal movement while maintaining proper support through the forefoot and heel.

Balanced Fit (Competition Regular)

The most versatile shape in the range. Designed for:

  • Medium volume feet
  • Balanced toe splay
  • Riders who need a performance fit without excessive compression

This fit provides a more natural forefoot shape than traditional race shoes while maintaining a stable and connected feel on the bike.

Relaxed Fit (Comfort Plus Wide)

Designed around:

  • Wider forefoot structures
  • Greater toe splay
  • Higher volume feet
  • Riders’ sensitive to pressure and compression

This shape allows the foot to sit more naturally inside the shoe, without forcing the toes inward or requiring excessive sizing adjustments to gain space.

Shape, Volume, and Instep Work Together

What makes the Lake TX224 triathlon shoe unique is that the concept extends beyond simple width scaling. Each fit profile incorporates differences in the following critical areas:

  • Forefoot shape
  • Toe box geometry
  • Overall volume
  • Instep height
  • Foot hold characteristics

This important focus creates a much more accurate fit experience for triathletes, across a wider range of foot anatomies. It delivers a triathlon shoe that fits your foot, can be fastened securely and comfortably, and which allows your foot to operate and perform. Instead of asking the rider to adapt to the shoe, the Lake TX224 adapts to the rider.

Why Proper Shape Matters on the Bike

When a cycling shoe matches the natural structure of the foot, several things improve immediately:

Reduced Pressure

The foot is no longer compressed into an unnatural shape, reducing common pressure points and numbness.

Improved Stability

The foot sits more securely inside the shoe without relying on excessive closure tension.

Better Power Transfer

A stable foot platform allows for more efficient transfer of force through the pedal stroke.

Long-Distance Comfort

Reduced compression and improved support become increasingly important during longer rides and triathlon events. Triathlons are about distance and effort. You need a triathlon shoe that can deliver comfort and performance all day long.

A Unique Closure System Designed Around Transition Speed and Security

The Lake TX224 triathlon shoe also introduces a redesigned closure system that works differently from traditional triathlon shoes. It gives triathletes something that they may be familiar with from running shoes. The shoe combines:

  • A speed lace system
  • A single hook-and-loop power strap

The key innovation is how these two systems interact. The speed lace tension is set once to establish the rider’s preferred fit. From there, the hook-and-loop power strap controls entry, exit, and closure tension. And, because the speed lace locker is fixed directly to the power strap:

  • Opening the strap releases lace tension
  • Closing the strap reapplies tension evenly across the foot

This creates several advantages for the athlete:

  • Faster entry and exit during transitions
  • More consistent closure pressure
  • Greater security across a larger area of the foot
  • Reduced pressure concentration compared to a single strap design

Instead of relying on one isolated closure point, the TX224 distributes hold and support across a broader zone of the upper, improving both comfort and foot security under load. It leaves you to concentrate on maximizing your performance, not worrying about the pain and discomfort from your feet. Triathlons are tough enough. Let Lake help to make your feet comfortable, with one of the most comfortable triathlon shoes in the world today.

Redefining Fit in Cycling Footwear

The Lake TX224 was not developed as simply another variation of an existing triathlon shoe. It was developed and designed around the idea that fit should start with anatomy. It focuses on the fact that feet are different for all of us, and that comfort is the key to performance on the bike. When you take so much effort in choosing your bike, and in your training plan, shouldn’t your triathlon shoes get the same level of attention. We think so.

By offering three genuinely distinct fit shapes within a single performance model, the TX224 recognizes something the cycling industry has largely ignored for years – different feet require different shapes. Not just different sizes. Not just different widths. They need different shapes.

That concept is what makes the Lake TX224 one of the most unique fit-driven cycling shoes available today. Isn’t it time that you gave it a tri!
