AEW Has No Known Plans To Merge Championships Despite Growing Fan Criticism

AEW’s championship situation is becoming a bigger talking point both online and backstage — but fans hoping the company plans to merge titles anytime soon may end up disappointed.

During a recent Fightful Select Q&A, Sean Ross Sapp was asked whether AEW has discussed consolidating some of its growing number of championships after fans continued criticizing how crowded the title scene has become. According to Sapp, he hasn’t heard about any actual creative plans to merge championships even though multiple people inside AEW apparently support the idea.

“Nope, not that I’ve heard of, even though plenty of people there I’ve talked to are in favor of it, or like tweets I put out about consolidating titles.”

Sapp then took things a step further and openly questioned why so many wrestlers seemingly need championships attached to feuds just to stay important on television.

“If wrestler egos are so fragile that they can’t be in a program without a title belt, they should come up with more creative ways to develop feuds.”

He also admitted one of the biggest frustrations with AEW right now is how random title shots can sometimes feel.

“There’s just very little cohesiveness to what justifies a title shot anymore. It’s very frustrating to see.”

The criticism comes as AEW’s championship picture continues getting more crowded by the month. Right now, Darby Allin is AEW World Champion, Jon Moxley holds the Continental Championship, Kazuchika Okada carries the International Title, Mark Davis recently won the National Championship, and Kevin Knight currently reigns as TNT Champion.

Fans have increasingly debated whether AEW’s expanding title scene has started hurting the overall importance of the belts themselves.

At this point, though, it doesn’t sound like AEW plans on shrinking the championship landscape anytime soon — even with frustration over the situation continuing to grow.
