Maple Leafs, Oilers & Golden Knights’ Torts

This edition (May 15, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes a number of big hockey headlines rolling in. There’s Oilers chatter about a wild Nurse-for-Rielly swap (maybe plausible, maybe not). The Maple Leafs are poking around Vincent Trocheck as they try to fix the middle. And John Tortorella is pulling his usual stunt by skipping postgame media after Vegas knocked out Anaheim.

NHL Trade Talk Recap May 15

Nurse-for-Rielly swap? Maybe Not Totally Out There

Okay, so Jim Matheson floated trading Darnell Nurse for Morgan Rielly, and the idea’s been buzzing — both guys are big names with long, pricey deals, and after rough seasons in Edmonton and Toronto, a fresh start could help. On paper, it sort of fits: both need shakeups, both have four years left on big contracts, but it’s way messier once you dive into cap math and who actually wants that salary.

Bob Stauffer hasn’t heard the trade chatter himself and thinks San Jose might be the real wild card if someone wants to dump a contract into a big-cap space. Bottom line: don’t rule it out entirely, but it feels unlikely unless both teams get desperate — still, the summer’s long and hockey trades have surprised us before.

Maple Leafs Poking Around for Vincent Trocheck

Word is that Toronto’s sniffing around Vincent Trocheck as the Rangers try to move his deal — Dreger says the Leafs are among the teams showing interest. Trocheck’s still productive (16 goals, 53 points last year) and would give Toronto a legit second-line center option, but his $5.625M AAV and long-term contract make any trade tricky.

If they pull it off, Trocheck could bump Tavares down and shore up the middle, which would be a signal to Matthews that management’s actually trying to improve the roster. With Chayka still settling in as GM and the team already shaking things up, it’s an early, bold move. But they must meet New York’s price.

Why the Maple Leafs Are Pursuing Top Rangers Center in Rumoured Trade

Classic John Tortorella move — after Vegas knocked out Anaheim, he straight-up skipped postgame media, kept the dressing room closed, and only let one player talk in a side room besides the two at the podium. Reporters were floored; a few called it unprecedented and pretty on-brand for a coach who’s never been shy about being grumpy with the press.

People in the media are pushing back hard: some say the league should force coaches to do their media duties (it’s part of the CBA), and others argue Torts’ attempts to “protect” players just stir up more noise. Either way, it’s another headline-generating moment for a coach who seems to court controversy no matter the result.
