Mark Jones’ side were no match for a well-oiled Leinster side in Dublin, losing 68-14
A long and arduous season for the Ospreys ended with a 10-try defeat away to reigning champions Leinster in Dublin, losing 68-14 at the Aviva Stadium.
Mark Jones’ side were looking to end a difficult campaign, which has seen their future threatened by the Welsh Rugby Union’s plans to cull a professional side, on a high – having seen their slim hopes of reaching the play-offs ended weeks ago.
They did pick up the Welsh Shield last week, but defeat in Dublin means they finish the season in 11th.
The game also marked Jac Morgan’s last in an Ospreys jersey ahead of the Wales captain’s move to Gloucester next season.
But it was Leinster – who wrapped up second in the league with the win – who warmed up for next weekend’s Champions Cup final in Bilbao in style.
The Irish province had the bonus point wrapped up after 23 minutes, following scores by Joe McCarthy, Max Deegan, Josh van der Flier and Jimmy O’Brien.
Ospreys second-row Huw Sutton dived over just after the half-hour mark to get the Ospreys on the board.
However, the second-half only brought more tries for the home side.
Ireland internationals Garry Ringrose and Jordan Larmour were next on the act.
McCarthy would soon notch up a hat-trick, with his next two scores being either side of Larmour’s second.
Lions wing James Lowe completed the rout with Leinster’s 10th shortly after the hour-mark.
Wales fly-half Dan Edwards would cross for a late consolation, allowing the Ospreys to have the final say on a chastening end to the season.
