Caitlin Clark put on one of the most dramatic individual performances of the WNBA season on Friday night, hitting seven three-pointers and helping the Indiana Fever come back in the last minute and force OT.
Indiana still lost 104-102, dropping to 1-2 for the season, but Clark gave the fanbase everything it could have asked for in those final minutes. Then Stephanie White stepped to the podium. And the internet immediately exploded.

When a reporter asked White specifically about Clark’s 17-point fourth quarter, the head coach steered the conversation away from her star and toward the collective. “I thought our whole group showed resilience, in that rally we showed the ability to make tough shots,” White said.
The response landed badly on social media, where Fever fans had been waiting to see their coach celebrate one of the more heroic individual efforts.

The frustration was immediate and widespread. Fans across social media argued there is a difference between praising the group and actively avoiding a player who just willed her team back from the brink with one of the best individual fourth quarters of the season so far.

Another WNBA fan wrote on X that they can’t wait for White to leave the franchise. “I cannot wait until she’s gone at the end of the year.”
Jason Whitlock called it “absolute coaching malpractice,” going after White for her gameplan. He specifically pointed out how rarely Clark and Aliyah Boston were on the floor together running the pick-and-roll that torched the Dallas Wings in the season opener.
Boston ended up exiting the game with a lower leg injury after 21 minutes. This also disrupted Indiana’s rhythm and left Clark without her most reliable partner on the floor for the last stretch of regulation.

White did address the defense separately, placing the blame on the coaching staff for not finding lineups that hold up on that end of the floor. “We put a lot of pressure on our offense to be perfect when we don’t consistently defend,” White said.
“This is on us as coaches.” That kind of accountability is appreciated, and the defensive numbers from Friday were surely alarming.
The Mystics, the youngest team in the WNBA, shot 56 percent from the field, dominated Indiana in the paint by 30 points, and went 22-of-28 from the free-throw line.
Indiana couldn’t survive the Mystics’ offense even when Clark is dropping 32 points. The Fever have a real problem on defense, and White would have to fix it as soon as possible if they want a real shot at the chip.
