Stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia was an exhausting affair as the peloton made its way north up the Adriatic Coast. It was two nervous hours before the day’s three-man breakaway established an advantage, initiated by Mikkel Bjerg. The trio stayed clear of the large chasing group – and peloton – all the way to the tricky finish in Fermo, where Jhonatan Narváez took his second stage win of the 2026 Giro having left Andreas Leknessund behind with 10 km to go.

The top 22 placings were filled out by those from the chase, but there was still a flurry of action from the pink jersey group as it entered Fermo. Afonso Eulálio himself accelerated up the punchy climb through town, drawing a response from Jonas Vingegaard in the KOM jersey. Then an attack from Jai Hindley with 300 metres to go stretched the group even further, Vingegaard again latching on without problem, but a two-second gap split the Dane and the rest led home by Egan Bernal and Eulálio.
