John Cena has revealed that two of WWE’s biggest recent concepts came directly from him.
While speaking on the Sports Illustrated Takedown podcast, Cena explained that both his retirement tour and the newly announced “John Cena Classic” were ideas he personally pitched to WWE management. He also revealed neither project came together overnight.
Cena praised Triple H and Nick Khan for being willing to listen to his ideas after years of trust built within the company. He then detailed how long the process took behind the scenes before WWE officially moved forward with both concepts.
“I approached them about the retirement tour. That was my idea. And so is the John Cena Classic. Now, the retirement tour took a year and a half for me to develop. It took a year and a half after I pitched and they accepted it for the WWE to curate and develop. That was a very long lead and the John Cena Classic took four or five months for me to get a proper situation where I could talk to Triple H and they’ve digested the information. We’ve been working out the details for about two months now and we’re going forward. We’re going to give it a shot.”
Cena explained that the “John Cena Classic” is designed to function similarly to WWE’s version of an All-Star Game, featuring both WWE and NXT talent competing in unique matches while fans help determine standout performers.
He also admitted WWE is still working through details involving fan voting systems and ways to prevent manipulation of the results before the event officially launches.
The project marks another major attempt by Cena to stay involved with WWE even after officially retiring from active competition inside the ring.
