There were five Canadian women in the first round of qualifying. But it was a tall order for four of them, with Bianca Andreescu expected to win – and winning.
She got a hard hitter in Viktoria Hruncakova in the second round. The Slovak played another Canadian, Katherine Sebov, on Tuesday and after strolling through the first set, found herself in a battle in the second. Which she narrowly won in a tiebreak.
Andreescu’s variety should be able to exploit Hruncakova’s rather mid movement. But the Slovak ended up playing a flyer and pulling it out in three sets.
