Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi played a crucial role in helping FC St. Gallen lift the Swiss Cup after a commanding 3-0 victory against Lausanne Ouchy in the final on Sunday.
Ati-Zigi was unexpectedly called into action just before halftime after reserve goalkeeper Lukas Watkowiak received a red card, forcing St. Gallen to make a goalkeeping change.
Watkowiak had been the club’s preferred goalkeeper throughout the cup campaign this season, but his dismissal opened the door for the Ghana international to step up on the big occasion.
Despite entering under pressure, Ati-Zigi delivered a composed and commanding display between the posts, keeping a clean sheet and producing a man-of-the-match performance during his 46 minutes on the pitch.
St. Gallen had taken an early lead in the eighth minute through German defender Tom Gaal, whose strike settled nerves for his side in the final.
After Ati-Zigi’s introduction, the Swiss outfit maintained control of the contest despite being reduced to ten men.
Captain Lukas Gortler doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 65th minute before Christian Witzig wrapped up the victory deep into stoppage time with St. Gallen’s third goal.
The triumph marks a memorable moment for Ati-Zigi, who once again demonstrated his reliability and experience when called upon.
His calm presence and important saves ensured St. Gallen comfortably protected their lead to secure the Swiss Cup title in impressive fashion.
