Ohsweken Speedway: Westbrook, Costa, Bailey, Hair win on May 22

OHSWEKEN, ON – Total Rentals and Asphalt Works presented Truckers Night on Friday at Ohsweken Speedway. Dylan Westbrook, Jesse Costa, Dave Bailey and Ken Hair took A-Main victories.

Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars

DJ Christie started on pole, with Josh Hansen next to him, for the 360 Sprint Car A-Main. Dylan Westbrook jumped straight to the lead after starting in the second row. The pack couldn’t catch Westbrook as he began to contend with traffic. Lap 13 saw Aaron Turkey and Kyle Phillips battle for position, which ended up seeing them collide with each other. Turkey’s car sustained significant front-end damage, which forced him to retire from the race.

The restart did not phase Westbrook as he took off once again, leading every single lap to the checkered flag. Westbrook parked his car in victory lane for the second week in a row and the 52nd time in a 360 Sprint Car event at Ohsweken. Next to finish were Hansen in second, Cory Turner third, Christie fourth and Nick Sheridan fifth.

Strickland’s Crate Sprint Cars

Mack DeMan and Tom Pellizzari brought the 28-car field to the green flag for the Crate Sprint Car A-Main. Brett Stratford made quick work of the front row and led the opening lap. Pellizzari and Jesse Costa worked themselves back into contention for the lead with Stratford by Lap 7.

Costa set up his pass for the lead on Lap 11 whilst navigating traffic. The only caution flag of the race came on Lap 13, as Pellizzari suffered a spin, ending any chances of contending for the win. Costa held his composure after the restart and took the win for a second-consecutive week. The victory also tied Costa with Mack DeMan atop the all-time Ohsweken Crate Sprint Car win list. Rounding out the top-five were Stratford in second, Keegan Baker third, Austin Roes fourth and Al Sleight fifth.

Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks

The front row of the grid featured Ron Loggie and Dave Bailey to begin the 20-lap Thunder Stock A-Main. Bailey set the pace early, getting ahead of Loggie from the get-go. The exciting start came to a halt as a pile-up involving several drivers brought out the caution flag on Lap 2.

Lap 8 also saw a caution flag due to Bella General’s car having a violent snap into the frontstretch wall and igniting in flames. The safety crew were quick to the scene, putting out the flames and helping General from the car, shaken up but unharmed. The restart saw Bailey and previous race winner Ryan Beagle race neck-and-neck to the finish, this time with Bailey edging Beagle for the win by 0.072 seconds. Beagle had to settle for second, with Loggie taking the final podium step. Rounding out the top-five were Brock Gregory in fourth and Trevor DeBoer fifth.

Insta-Insulation Mini Stocks

Craig Cole started on pole, alongside Jeff Elsliger, to take the green flag for the 15-lap Mini Stock A-Main. Cole led the opening laps, but the race struggled to maintain a steady pace as caution flags fell three times in the first six laps.

Cole lost the lead to Ken Hair after the third restart, but Hair couldn’t get too far ahead as Alex Riley was glued to his car until a timely caution came out for the stopped car of Mike Sarantakos. This briefly relieved the pressure, but set up a dash to the finish, which saw Hair stand tall to the challenge and cross the finish line first. Rounding out the top-five were Cole in second, Riley third, Nick Erskine fourth and Tim DeBoer fifth.
