Josh Hokit openly discusses his UFC ‘persona’ ahead of return to the cage

UFC bad boy Josh Hokit has discussed his new ‘persona’ as he prepares for one of the biggest fights of his career thus far.

At UFC Freedom 250, Josh Hokit will go head to head with Derrick Lewis. It serves as the biggest challenge of his young mixed martial arts career, and it comes off the back of him going to war with Curtis Blaydes.

In addition to what he can do in the cage, Hokit has also made waves for the persona that he has created for himself away from it. In many ways, it feels like an enhanced, heavyweight version of what Colby Covington did. In essence, it’s a gimmick.

In a recent interview, Hokit had the following to say about those who disagree with what he’s doing.

Hokit explains his new ‘persona’

“I don’t mind it too much as long as they’re giving me certain fights and they’re paying me a certain amount of money,” he told MMA Junkie Radio. “I mean, everyone could hate me for all that I care. I’ll just get the money and one day I won’t have to be bothering anybody anymore.

“I’ll just be on a lake somewhere on a boat, not bothering anybody. Until then, I’m going to be really disconnecting with people so maybe that’s a mind-shift for some up-and-coming fighters that they need to stop worrying about being so cool and liked.”

“You set the bar way too high for yourself,” Hokit explained. “But it’s like there’s other emotions that you could kind of trigger if you’re willing to have the courage to put yourself out there and you kind of have to be comfortable with yourself. I mean, most importantly, you’ve got to train hard and you’ve got to win these fights because if you don’t, I mean, none of this s— matters.”
