Where The Rock’s “Know Your Role” Catchphrase Came From

The Rock’s “Know Your Role” catchphrase became one of the most iconic lines in WWE history, but D’Lo Brown says it did not come out of nowhere.

While speaking to Inside The Ropes, Brown discussed The Rock’s evolution during his time in The Nation of Domination. He explained that Rock was constantly testing different promo ideas and borrowing pieces of real locker room language that fit his growing character.

According to D’Lo Brown, the famous “Know Your Role” line actually had roots in Ron Simmons’ way of speaking inside The Nation. Brown said Simmons would use a rougher version of the phrase, and Rock eventually adapted it for television as part of his own character.

“The term everybody knows when Rocky goes ‘know your role,’ that’s a Ron Simmons thing. Ron Simmons would go, ‘Man, know your damn role. Shut up and know your role.’ So Rocky took it on TV.”

That phrase became a key part of The Rock’s rise. Once he started calling himself The Rock and leaning into his heel persona, lines like “Know Your Role” helped him separate himself from the failed Rocky Maivia babyface run. Brown also explained that The Rock was always experimenting with promo material, writing down ideas and trying them out whenever he had the chance. From there, Rock would work those ideas into promos to see what stuck.

“He would carry a notebook with him. We all, a lot of us did. And if there’s music on the radio and he’d hear something, he’d go, ‘Oh, I like that,’ and pull the book out and he’d write it down. Then you’d hear him try it in a promo the next time he was cutting a promo.”

The “Know Your Role” line eventually became one of The Rock’s signature phrases and helped define his run as one of WWE’s most entertaining stars. D’Lo Brown’s story adds another layer to the phrase by showing how much of The Rock’s act came from listening, experimenting, and shaping real-life moments into television gold.

The Rock may have made “Know Your Role” famous, but D’Lo Brown says Ron Simmons played a major part in the phrase’s origin. That makes it another example of how The Nation of Domination helped Rock find the voice that changed his entire WWE career.
