Road Dogg Says He Left WWE After Feeling He Wasn’t Needed Anymore

Road Dogg is explaining why he walked away from WWE, and it came down to more than just being unhappy. The WWE Hall of Famer said he still loves wrestling, but he no longer felt like WWE needed what he had to offer.

Back in March 2026, it was reported that “Road Dogg” Brian James left his creative team position with WWE. Ringside News noted at the time that James had expressed his unhappiness and tendered his resignation.

While speaking on Busted Open Radio, Road Dogg said he still wants to work in wrestling, but he wants to do it somewhere that actually wants and needs him.

“I still love wrestling, and I want to do wrestling. I want to do it for somebody that wants it and needs it.”

Road Dogg said WWE was doing so well that he felt like his role was no longer necessary. The company was making money, setting records, and firing on all cylinders, but that success made him feel like he was just collecting a paycheck instead of truly earning it.

“And I feel like WWE didn’t want it or need it anymore. You know what I mean? They were firing on all cylinders and making money and setting records and breaking them. It was complacent. I felt like I wasn’t earning it. I was getting a check, but I felt like I wasn’t earning it. And I wasn’t having any fun either.”

He also admitted that the job had become so much work that it stopped being fun. Road Dogg said he stayed longer than he wanted because he was afraid of unemployment and unsure what would come next.

“It got to be so much work that it stopped being fun. I told myself a long time ago—I actually stayed longer than I wanted to just out of fear of unemployment and fear of, ‘Oh God, what do I do now?’”

Road Dogg also got honest about his past, saying his addiction issues and poor money management made walking away from a steady WWE paycheck even scarier.

“I didn’t do well with my money. I’m a drug addict and recovering alcoholic. I didn’t manage my money well. So, that fear of the unknown kept me there for a long time.”

The moment that finally pushed him came during a phone call with his wife. Road Dogg said she told him she would live with him in a tent if that was what it took, and that was enough for him to leave.

“And my wife told me on the phone—I was about to go into a meeting—and she said, ‘I’ll live with you in a tent.’ And I said, ‘I’m coming home right now.’”

Road Dogg made it clear that his love for wrestling is still there, but his WWE creative run had stopped feeling right. He did not feel needed, he did not feel fulfilled, and eventually he decided it was time to walk away.
