Liverpool hold talks to re-sign Darwin Nunez, Andoni Iraola loves him

Liverpool are now considering a stunning move for an “unbelievable” player, who is highly regarded by Andoni Iraola, and talks have already been held.

Iraola wipes the slate clean after replacing Arne Slot at Anfield

Following a very disappointing season, which saw the Reds stumble to Champions League qualification with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League, Iraola has insisted the current squad will have the opportunity to prove themselves.

However, the new manager also indicated there could be some new arrivals over the next couple of months, saying: “I think there is still work to do, like normally in every club in this moment of the season.

“But right now, for me the thing is to value especially the players that we have right now in the squad. For me, and I will tell them, [they] are all new signings.

“For me, you are all new signings and I think we have a lot of quality in our squad, and [I’m] really looking forward to working with them.”

With Ibrahima Konate set to join Real Madrid, signing a new centre-back will be important, but bringing in another centre-forward may also be vital, given that Hugo Ekitike is set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Liverpool hold talks to sign “unbelievable” forward

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are now considering a stunning move to sign former striker Darwin Nunez, who joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in a £46m deal last summer.

However, Nunez is set to be on the market once again, as he has agreed to terminate his Al-Hilal contract early, and a number of clubs from across Europe have been sounded out, including the Reds, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Merseyside club are ‘very much in the mix’ to secure the Uruguayan’s signature, with Iraola known to be a big fan, having been left impressed by his work rate.

Ally McCoist also lauded the 26-year-old after he set up Harvey Elliott’s last-gasp winner against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League during the 2024-25 season, saying: “Unbelievable football from Darwin Nunez, because nine times out of ten he hits this. He doesn’t, he takes the right option. Watch Nunez, usually he pulls the trigger there, it looks a simple pass and it is but it’s there to hit first time, that’s the secret of it.”

That said, while Nunez impressed at times in a Liverpool shirt, Arne Slot got rid of him for a reason, and he netted just five goals in 30 Premier League matches during his final season at Anfield.

With that in mind, the Reds shouldn’t consider re-signing the 38-cap Uruguay international this summer, unless his wage demands are low, and he is willing to play a limited role.
