Chelsea have a few positions with question marks over them this summer, and goalkeeper is certainly one of them.

Robert Sanchez looks set to stay as first choice, but backup Filip Jorgensen could leave. That is leading most people to believe that young Mike Penders could step up and be the new number 2. According to the young Belgian himself, he’s ready for that.

“I am starting pre-season at Chelsea and will try to prove myself in training,” the stopper said in quotes picked up by Belgian site Voetbalkrant.

“Hopefully, I stay injury-free and can prove myself. Anything is possible, but I am starting at Chelsea and will do my utmost to achieve my goal. Am I ready for it? Definitely, but first I want to focus entirely on this World Cup. After that, we’ll see.”

We’re not as sure as Penders is that he’s ready – although we admire his confidence. To us, the sensible move is another loan, to a Premier League club ideally. But we also see the appeal of him coming in as our backup and competing with Robert Sanchez.

In other news…

There is a lot of talk about Marc Cucurella leaving Chelsea this summer, and we can see it happening – but only if Atletico Madrid offer some serious money to the Blues.

Frank Leboeuf is excited about Chelsea’s new era – but has already identified one thing his old team need to do to succeed this season.
