The 20-year-old is splitting his time between the all-black, stealth ‘Stang and team owner Stephen Grove’s Porsche Carrera Cup car.
Grove is a regular in the one-make class, which continues its season at the upcoming Darwin Triple Crown after kicking off at Albert Park back in March.
“When you do a shakedown, you do some laps and then stop and make changes,” Stephen Grove explained to Speedcafe.
“So Kai is using that time to jump into the Cup Car, do a run and then go over some data with me so I can use that as a benchmark.”
Grove reported a smooth run for the new Gen3 machine, with the track having dried out following a damp start.
He noted only Allen is swapping between cars, with the team boss tempted – but not game – to have a steer of the Mustang.
“There’s a bit of eagerness, I’ve been thinking about it,” he said.
“I might have a spin in one of them at the end of the year, but I wouldn’t want to jump into a brand new car!”
New cars are only permitted 60km of running to iron out any bugs before their race debut.
The Mustang is currently devoid of a livery, with its Indigenous Round colours to be applied on Friday ahead of the team’s departure for Darwin.
