Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar has never been able to lock in a long-term contract extension to get some financial flexibility. After signing two three-year contracts with the Boston Bruins after turning pro, the Czech goaltender then signed a two-year deal with the Calgary Flames before moving on to the Flyers before the 2025-26 season.
Philadelphia’s newest starter has one year remaining on that deal that pays him $3.35 million annually. Still, he will become eligible for an extension on July 1, and it looks like the Flyers are going to reward him for a great first season, according to Kevin Weekes via X, formerly Twitter.
“Per sources, I’m told G Vladar and the Flyers are working towards closing in on a 5 Yr Contract Extension that’s likely to land in the mid 5M AAV range.”
It’s a risk for the Flyers to put all their eggs in the Vladar basket after just one season, but inking a starting goaltender for a contract averaging around $5.5 million annually is great value if he can build on this past season. The goaltender had a 2.42 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage through 52 games, while leading the Flyers to a surprising playoff berth and then a first-round win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
While Vladar’s regular season was impressive, it might have been his first taste of being a starter in the postseason that tipped the scales in his favor. Through 10 games, the goaltender owned a 2.18 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. If he can continue putting up those kinds of performances, the Flyers will have no problem with him being their starter for the next six seasons.
