Packers’ Logic Behind Overhauling Wide Receiver Room Emerges

The Packers‘ wide receiving corps is going to look much different in September, from the team that walked off the field at Soldier Field back in January.

Gone are leading receiver Romeo Doubs and veteran Dontayvion Wicks, and thrust into prominent roles at the top of the depth chart will be Christian Watson and Matthew Golden.

Head coach Matt LaFleur, and quarterback Jordan Love, are betting big that both Watson and Golden stay healthy, and last spring’s first-round pick out of Texas make a major leap.

Over at the Packers’ official website, team reporter Wes Hodkiewicz argues that finding a fit in all aspects — scheme culture, and more, played a key role in the Packers’ decision to overhaul the receiver room.

“Whether it’s a backup quarterback or WR1,” Hodkiewicz writes. “There are few better in the NFL than LaFleur at finding what his players do best and fitting his offenses to those strengths. While the Packers have benefitted from having a deep receiving corps the past two years, there comes a time when teams must identify the key ingredients needed to master the recipe. I feel like that’s where Green Bay is now with Christian WatsonJayden ReedTucker Kraft and Matthew Golden.”

LaFleur is betting big that Watson, Reed, and Golden take big leaps, and that they can propel Green Bay beyond the first round of the playoffs, in what could become a pressure-packed season for the Packers.
