Yoane Wissa starting for DR Congo at the Houston Stadium on Wednesday, up against Portugal in their opening group match.
Portugal huge favourites to win this match and indeed the group.
When Joao Neves gave them the lead after only six minutes it looked like the writing was on the wall for Yoane Wissa and his teammates.
However, the first half then became a story of endless passing from Portugal to get nowhere and actually DR Congo the threatening team.
Yoane Wissa was a bit unlucky with a left foot effort that went just wide.
DR Congo continuing to threaten and Portugal continuing to pass for the sake of it.
Then came the magical moment in the fifth minute of added time at the end of the first half, a set-piece routine on the right eventually seeing a deep cross delivered and a superb Yoane Wissa header.
Newcastle United’s first goal at this 2026 World Cup!
In that first half, Portugal had almost 80% possession and they made four times as many passes (489) as DR Congo. Yet the African side had four more shots and were level.
Not a lot changed after the break, Portugal having most of the ball but doing nothing with it, DR Congo dangerous on the break.
Portugal concentrating far too much on trying to get the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo who was having a woeful match.
Moving into the final ten minutes and Portugal still failing to have a single shot on target since their 6th minute goal.
Both Yoane Wissa and former Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba playing the whole match.
Stunning stuff from DR Congo and a famous result to get their 2026 World Cup up and running.
Now we have the confirmed Thomas Tuchel team for the opening England group game tonight.
