As we reported here, TNA legend Amazing Red is expected to make his return to the company at Slammiversary. Before the former X Division Champion competes on the June 28th event, WWE Vault has unearthed a rare match featuring Amazing Red. Even more interestingly, it’s the one and only match Amazing Red had in WWE against CM Punk! A Dark Match before a May 2005 Velocity and SmackDown taping featured a rare CM Punk vs. Amazing Red match. WWE Vault has unearthed this encounter, and now Amazing Red vs. CM Punk is going viral.
WWE Vault Features CM Punk vs. Amazing Red
WWE’s YouTube Channels are known to unearth some very unique gems. From Kane dressed as a Christmas tree to Brutus Beefcake as the enigmatic Furface, WWE Vault has become a go-to for many pro wrestling fans. Now, independent wrestling lovers can really rejoice, as a rare clash of two indy legends in a WWE ring has come to light once again.
Over a year before CM Punk would make his main roster debut on ECW, The Second City Saint struggled to catch the upper brass’ eye on Dark Matches. He was everything from an extra in John Cena’s WrestleMania entrance to a partner with Mickie James.
While CM Punk was already signed in the WWE system in May 2005, Amazing Red was still trying to get in the door. The high-flying star had one tryout match in WWE. That encounter was CM Punk.
Much to the shock of many, these men didn’t impress in their one-and-only documented match. Although WWE didn’t sign Amazing Red, and CM Punk wasn’t called up after this match, the two really got the crowd into it. Check out the rare CM Punk vs. Amazing Red Dark Match from WWE Vault:
Futures of CM Punk and Amazing Red
It was a very interesting time for WWE to re-release Amazing Red vs. CM Punk. After all, their partners at TNA just teased his arrival at the June 28th Slammiversary event.
Meanwhile, CM Punk’s WWE future has been in question. WWE Vault usually likes to stir the pot when the internet is buzzing. So, unleashing this vintage match was certainly a choice by the WWE Vault curators to re-release this gem, and one that has helped this video go viral a year after uploading it.
The WWE Vault channel is one of the many ways WWE is trying to make human monies on YouTube. Rumor has it that WWE is collaborating with the Knicks to make a YouTube documentary about Danhausen’s role in their NBA Championship victory.
There are many matches that we can never believe happened. Like, did you know that Chris Candido wrestled The Great Khali once? Check out that rarity here.
