The life and career of Gervonta Davis continue to make headlines, mostly involving the law, but his talent in the ring creates plenty of talking points. His future in professional boxing appears uncertain, following being stripped of the WBA lightweight title and being made champion in recess following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Miami Gardens Police Department (MGPD).
His coach, Calvin Ford, recently spoke to Fight Hub TV and clarified rumours regarding a potential Gervonta Davis vs Floyd Schofield fight.
Gervonta Davis and his legal troubles
Gervonta Davis is one of the most talented fighters of his generation. His punching power allows him to be patient in fights and wait for openings. It’s almost impossible to question his ability in the ring, even after his lacklustre showing against Lamont Roach Jr. Roach got his game plan spot on, but Davis appeared to be mentally elsewhere.
The pattern of Davis’s legal troubles is quite frankly disturbing. His character leaves plenty to be desired, but his ability in the ring is excellent. He needs boxing, and boxing needs his talent. In 10 years, we don’t want to see a quiz question: “What happened to Gervonta Davis?”
Calvin Ford discusses Gervonta Davis vs Floyd Schofield
Discussing Davis’s return, Ford said:
“When he makes the phone call, it’s a wrap. That’s all we’re doing is waiting until we finish dealing with certain circumstances, and then after that’s all out of the way, we keep everything behind and just look forward to the future.”
When asked the last time he spoke to Tank, and how he is, Ford said: “Oh, he’s doing great. His mental’s great, kids great. He’s living life.”
Ford was then asked about the Floyd Schofield fight for Tank, and said: “Right now, it’s going back and forth. Once we see the contract, you know it’s a wrap. It’s just talking right now.”
When asked what he thought of the potential matchup between Davis and Schofield, Ford said: “All fights are good fights, especially when the kid or anyone comes prepared to fight. You have to just wait and see.”
