NHL Weekend Rumors: Tkachuk Trade Truth, Robertson to Ottawa, Murphy Deal Close

In today’s NHL weekend rumors report, the Ottawa Senators made a blockbuster trade with the Florida Panthers, the Chicago Blackhawks could be in on John Carlson, the Dallas Stars are still trying to figure things out with Jason Robertson, and the Boston Bruins are weighing extension talks with Pavel Zacha, but could be traded. Finally, how many more trade requests are out there that we don’t know about? Elliotte Friedman hints more are coming.

What’s Next and the Truth Behind the Brady Tkachuk Trade

The biggest storyline this weekend was Sunday’s blockbuster trade involving Brady Tkachuk. His departure from Ottawa felt like it came out of left field, but the deal had been in the works for some time. The team and the players were dealing with mounting pressure to make a move when they learned weeks ago that he wasn’t re-signing. The ongoing noise surrounding Tkachuk’s future had become a distraction the organization could no longer ignore. The belief was that they didn’t want this hanging over the team all season.

Tkachuk had submitted a list of four preferred destinations: Minnesota, Vegas, Carolina, and Florida. It was clear Florida was his top choice.

Questions will now pivot to what the Senators will do with the return (three first-round draft picks and a second). The belief is that the Senators intend to flip the picks for something big. They want an impact player.

Blackhawks Eye Carlson, But Does He Want Them?

The Chicago Blackhawks continue to explore ways to accelerate their rebuild, and one intriguing name on their radar is veteran defenseman John Carlson.

Frank Seravalli believes the Blackhawks would be interested in pitching for him in free agency, but questions remain about whether Chicago is far enough east, given that he wants to head that way to wind down his career.

Sabres Facing Byram Questions

Elsewhere, the Buffalo Sabres are navigating a delicate situation with Bowen Byram. The talented defenseman reportedly sees himself as a No. 1 option but doesn’t currently have a path to that role in Buffalo. His desire for a bigger opportunity—not dissatisfaction with the team—appears to be driving speculation.

Byram’s situation is one to monitor closely as the offseason unfolds. There will be teams interested. Is there legs to the idea of a blockbuster between the Maple Leafs and Sabres?

Stars, Robertson Still Far Apart on Extension

The Dallas Stars and Jason Robertson remain locked in contract discussions that have yet to gain meaningful traction. Dallas would prefer to keep Robertson’s cap hit in line with Mikko Rantanen’s $12 million AAV, but Robertson’s camp reportedly believes his value is closer to $14 million annually, especially with the salary cap rising. The gap between the two sides has not significantly narrowed.

Meanwhile, Robertson might become a target for the Senators, who just moved Brady Tkachuk and have money to spend and draft picks to send back in a trade, or via an offer sheet.

Connor Murphy Close to Signing with the Oilers

TSN’s Ryan Rishaug writes, “Sounds like solid progress has been made between [Connor] Murphy and the Oilers, wouldn’t be surprised to see something get done in the next day or so.” The Oilers got Jason Dickinson signed on Sunday to a new five-year, $20 million deal. It would be expected that the Oilers’ new deal with Murphy might fall in the same range.

Bruins Balancing Zacha Talks With Trade Interest

The Boston Bruins have made it clear that extending Pavel Zacha is a top priority this summer, but the situation is far from straightforward. As negotiations continue, Boston is also gauging trade interest from other teams. If Zacha’s camp and the Bruins can’t find common ground, the team may pivot toward a deal if a strong offer presents itself.

Trade Buzz Builds Across Multiple Teams

Trade chatter is intensifying league-wide, with several notable names in play. The Vegas Golden Knights are believed to be exploring the possibility of moving goaltender Adin Hill. The Oilers, meanwhile, are reportedly confident they won’t need to retain salary in any potential Darnell Nurse deal. There is lots of talk about Vincent Trocheck’s preference to stay out East. Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks continue to draw attention around Elias Pettersson and Jake DeBrusk, both of whom have been linked to multiple clubs, keeping Vancouver firmly in the rumor mill.
