Mets Make Roster Decision After 7th Straight Loss

The New York Mets continue to slump their way through the 2026 MLB season.

After a 2-1 loss at home against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night, the Mets have fallen in their 7th straight game and now sit 14 games under the .500 mark.

New York started to make some changes to their team earlier this week. Starting with a small trade which sent their longest tenured player in David Peterson to the Chicago Cubs.

On Friday morning, the Mets made the difficult decision to fire manager Carlos Mendoza and replace him with Andy Green after 81 games.

The team made yet another roster change on Saturday morning.

The Mets announced that they have reinstated right-handed pitcher Christian Scott from the 15-day injured list. As a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher Zach Thornton was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

Scott has been on the shelf for the Mets since June 12 with right hip impingement. With his return on June 27, he served the injured list minimum stint.

The 27-year-old has been a true bright spot on this struggling Mets team thus far.

Through nine starts, Scott has posted a 3.10 ERA with 47 strikeouts and two wins in 40 2/3 innings pitched. He looks to come back and help pick up a rotation that has heavily faltered since his injury.

Scott will make his return in a start against the Phillies on Saturday afternoon.

On the other hand, the Mets sent the 24-year-old Thornton back down to the minor leagues.

On Friday, Thornton made his second ever major league start. After his first start which saw him give up four runs in 4 1/3 innings, Thornton bounced back.

Against a red-hot Phillies lineup, Thornton pitched six innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts.

He was excellent and will certainly be in New York’s future rotation plans as the season continues.

New York has been unable to recover following their historic collapse to end the 2025 season.

The team sits at a 34-48 record through 82 games. They are last in the National League East division and back of the division leading Atlanta Braves by 16.0 games.

Not only in the division, but the Mets are 10.0 games back of a National League Wild Card spot.

They will need to quickly turn around in order to salvage their season and the second year of the Juan Soto era.

Christian Scott will attempt to right the ship in his start against the Phillies at 4:10 p.m.
