They will run out of budget cap money soon

Political battles in Formula 1 are continuing to intensify, with Ferrari once again finding itself at the centre of the debate. One of the key talking points during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend was the aggressive pace of development shown by several teams despite the financial restrictions imposed by Formula 1’s budget cap.

Budget cap and ADUO remain major talking points

In recent days, drivers including Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz admitted they were surprised by the number of upgrades being introduced across the grid under such strict spending regulations. Their comments prompted a sharp response from Lando Norris, who suggested his fellow drivers should spend less time discussing rivals and focus more on their own technical challenges.

Toto Wolff turns his attention to Ferrari

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff then entered the debate with some pointed remarks aimed directly at Ferrari.

“We’re a little surprised that Ferrari can continue introducing such substantial upgrades. In my opinion, they’ll soon run out of the money available under the budget cap. We simply can’t do that because we don’t have enough room within the spending limit to bring as many new parts as they do.”

Wolff also expressed hope that the balance could shift later in the Formula 1 season.

“We hope that towards the end of the season they won’t be able to introduce any more new parts, while we’ll still be able to bring further upgrades. That’s what logic suggests.”

The Mercedes boss continued to single out the Scuderia’s development programme.

“The only team that hasn’t slowed down its upgrade pace is Ferrari. We introduced a major package in Montreal, followed by some smaller components, and Red Bull and McLaren have done the same. Ferrari seems to be the only team with no limits in that respect. On top of that, they were expecting the ADUO and still arrived with a new engine. But to introduce a new power unit, you have to have started development six months earlier…”

Toto Wolff’s comments add another chapter to the ongoing political battle surrounding Formula 1’s budget cap, with Ferrari’s aggressive development strategy now firmly under the spotlight as the championship heads into the second half of the season.
