After eight memorable seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James is ready to find a new home. With free agency rapidly approaching, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin revealed the specific instructions the NBA legend gave agent Rich Paul, potentially changing everything about his upcoming decision.
LeBron James’ Offseason-Altering Instructions to Rich Paul
Initially, ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania named the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Cleveland Cavaliers as potential landing spots for the league’s all-time leading scorer. However, after the McMenamin’s latest report, James appears willing to hear out all 30 teams if they express interest.
“LeBron James has instructed Rich Paul to talk to everyone around the league who is interested in him playing for them and come back to him with what the options are so he can make his decision, a source familiar with James’ thinking told ESPN,” McMenamin wrote.
While returning to Cleveland or Miami, or potentially heading to the Golden State to team up with Stephen Curry, would be legendary, it’s clear that, heading into what may be his final NBA season, James wants to weigh all his options and be in complete control.
Other contenders in need of forward play include the Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, and New York Knicks. The Timberwolves, in particular, as reported by Sam Amick of The Athletic, are “known to have interest.”
Playing alongside LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards, and Rudy Gobert would be electric. In his 23rd NBA season, James proved he still has plenty left in the tank, averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game on 51.5% from the field. He could very well be the final piece Minnesota needs to win its first NBA championship.

On the other hand, joining the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks or the Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs would send shockwaves across the basketball world and give James an even better chance of securing his fifth NBA championship.
Ultimately, though, Golden State, Miami, and Cleveland appear to be the most realistic destinations. A return home to Cleveland would provide a storybook ending and allow him to finish things where he started.
Meanwhile, teaming up with either Giannis Antetokounmpo in South Beach or Stephen Curry in the Bay Area would make headlines daily.
NBA free agency begins Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET. The next few days will be filled with suspense as the 22-time All-Star decides where his farewell tour will take place.
