Lodging any claims about the aftermath of New Zealand’s unwelcome 0-3 whitewash, Jasprit Bumrah, the stand-in captain of India has expressed confidence that there, the team is moving on. In the first test match at Brisbane, Bumrah replaced Sharma under the child’s captaincy since the former led the team in the birth of his son. It is not common to observe that the pacer-bowler plays the role of captain Wicketkeeper Bumrah believes they are tactically ahead of the batters, therefore, it would be good to have them in charge most of the time as well.
‘It entails respect. Everybody has their own approach to things. There was Virat. Then there was Rohit. There is me. I suppose, it is respect. I don’t see it as a title. I adore the opportunity to lead and bear obligations. I had a conversation with Rohit. There wasn’t much explaining to do, once I got here, but I understood leading the team a bit better,” Bumrah said during an event before the Perth Test.
“When they make a pacer a captain, that has always been my point of being persistent. They are better tactically. Pat has done a great job. There are many such cases in history as well. One such can be found in the times of Kapil Dev and many other true leaders who have led in the past. This will hopefully be the beginning of a new culture,” Bumrah said after being given captaincy for the match.
The five-match Test series will begin here on Friday.
“When you win you start from zero but when you lose, then also you also start from zero. We are not carrying any baggage from India. Yes, we have our learnings from the New Zealand series but those were different conditions and our results here have been different,” said Bumrah, who is leading in the opening Test in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who is on paternity leave.
Bumrah further mentioned that the side has picked its playing 11 but will only disclose it during the toss.
“We have finalised our playing XI and you will get to know tomorrow morning before the start of the match,” the skipper stated.
