Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent surgery to stabilize a fracture in his left hand and is working toward playing Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. The procedure took place on Monday after Herbert sustained the injury during the first quarter of Sunday’s victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Herbert had a plate and screws inserted into his non-throwing hand. He did not practice on Wednesday but participated in a limited capacity on Thursday while wearing a cast. The Chargers list his status as day-to-day heading into Week 14.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Thursday that Herbert needs swelling to subside but appears to be trending in the right direction. Herbert has stated his goal is to play against Philadelphia and is treating the week as if he will be available. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed optimism about Herbert’s chances to suit up.
Herbert missed only one offensive series after suffering the injury against Las Vegas. He returned to the field in the second quarter and played the remainder of the game exclusively from shotgun and pistol formations. The injury prevented him from taking snaps under center.
The sixth-year quarterback completed 15 of 20 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns against the Raiders. He has thrown for 2,842 yards and 21 touchdowns this season while completing 66.9 percent of his attempts.
Herbert has demonstrated mobility throughout 2025 with 66 rushing attempts for 314 yards and two touchdowns. The hand injury could limit his willingness to run if he plays on Monday. Herbert avoided taking snaps near the line of scrimmage after sustaining the fracture Sunday.
The Chargers’ backup quarterback, Trey Lance, would make his first start for Los Angeles if Herbert cannot play. Lance briefly replaced Herbert against the Raiders and received increased practice repetitions this week. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman indicated the team is preparing contingency plans for various scenarios.
Los Angeles holds an 8-4 record and sits in the fifth playoff position in the AFC. The Chargers have won seven of their last eight games and remain undefeated in AFC West play. Philadelphia enters Monday night at 8-4 and leads the NFC East division. Herbert has played through injuries previously. He competed with a broken finger on his left hand during the 2023 season. Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen and Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers played through fractured left hands during the 2024 season.
The Chargers will release their final injury report on Friday afternoon. Herbert has not missed a game since Jim Harbaugh became head coach before the 2024 campaign. Los Angeles is 1-4 in games Herbert has missed due to injury since he entered the league in 2020.
The Monday Night Football matchup kicks off at SoFi Stadium. Herbert continues working with team medical staff to reduce swelling and increase his mobility. His availability remains uncertain but the quarterback maintains he is preparing to play.
