The recently appointed captain of Team India for T20 matches is not considered for One Day International (ODI) cricket. Ajit Agarkar, the head of the BCCI selection committee, confirmed this during a press conference on Monday. Agarkar, who spoke alongside the new head coach Gautam Gambhir, mentioned that Surya’s name was not even brought up, as players like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant are back in the ODI team. Although Suryakumar was part of India’s squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, it’s clear he is currently low in the team’s priority list.
Aakash Chopra, a former Indian cricketer, made a significant prediction in a video on his YouTube channel. He suggested that Surya will also not be part of the Indian team for the Champions Trophy next year, especially since he is not traveling to Sri Lanka for the upcoming three-match ODI series.
“Suryakumar Yadav was on the team that made it to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. He also played in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he made a great catch, but he’s not in the ODI team now,” Chopra mentioned in the video.
“When asked about this, he explained that Suryakumar Yadav is an amazing and unique player, but he’ll only play in T20 matches and isn’t being considered for ODIs right now. So, since he’s not being considered and the Champions Trophy is coming up, you can guess that Suryakumar Yadav won’t be playing there,” he added.
Regarding the younger players, Chopra believes Shubman Gill will definitely be part of India’s Champions Trophy team, especially since he’s been named vice-captain for the 50-over format.
“Shubman Gill will be present there. Agarkar mentioned that Gill is a player who competes in all three formats of the game. Gautam Gambhir thinks it’s a good thing to have players who can perform in all three formats. They have also been impressed with his leadership skills during the IPL and the match against Zimbabwe. This is why he has been appointed as the vice-captain for the ODI team,” he stated.
