Adam Azim gives honest reaction to Steve Claggett demolition

On May 30, at Wembley Arena, Adam Azim dominated and stopped the normally durable Canadian Steve Claggett. Their super-lightweight bout headlined a BOXXER Promotions card on BBC2. Azim once again showed his class, becoming the first fighter to stop Claggett since Romeo Jakosalem in 2011. After the fight, the Brit spoke to talkSPORT, detailing what he believes he deserves after this victory.

Adam Azim dominates Steve Claggett in London

Claggett has shown his toughness throughout his career, having only previously been stopped once. However, Azim (15-0, 12 KOs) was in no mood to go the distance, and started quickly, controlling the centre of the ring and picking his punches impressively. Claggett (40-9-2, 28 KOs) was clearly struggling with the speed of Azim, who drew blood from the Canadian’s nose quickly. The second round also saw Azim drop Claggett, who had no answer to the skills of the Brit.

Although Claggett was saved by the bell in the second, Azim unleashed a series of hurtful-looking punches in the third round, which had the Canadian in trouble and prompted the referee to wave the fight off, awarding Azim the third-round TKO win.

It was an impressive showing from Azim, who spoke in the ring after the fight and said: “I had to train extra hard for 12 weeks because I know Steve Claggett is very game, very strong, and he took Teofimo Lopez 12 rounds, but I did my job.”

Adam Azim discusses what he deserves

After his win against Claggett, Adam Azim spoke to talkSPORT about what he deserves next:

“I think I deserve a world title shot. I’m on my 15th fight. Statement after statement. Steve Claggett was a dangerous fight, but I made it look easy. Of course, the best performance of my career so far, the toughest opponent I’ve had on paper. I did a great job. Hats off to Steve Claggett.”

Azim looks ready for that step up in his next fight. Whether that’s a world title shot remains to be seen. In the super lightweight division, the current world champions are Dalton Smith (WBC), Gary Antuanne Russell (WBA), and Shakur Stevenson (WBO). The IBF title is currently vacant, with the number 1-rated Lindolfo Delgado recently ordered to face Movladdin Biyarslanov.
