The biggest surprise player at Roland Garros was finally derailed by the 19 year old phenom from Russia who appears to be the heir apparent to dominate on the WTA throne.
Mirra Andreeva masterfully solved the Polish marvel Maja Chwalinska in the 2026 Roland Garros final 63 62. It was an expected result as Andreeva has come close to conquering Grand Slam titles in her short career while the 24 year old had only won one singles Grand Slam main draw match in her life before this astounding fortnight.
Chwalinska magically won three qualifying tournament matches at Roland Garros and then six main draw rounds before finally running face first into reality today. She had to be overwhelmed by the occasion and by Andreeva’s supreme arsenal today. How Chwalinska progresses from this kind of staggering result, vaulting from world no. 114 to the top 30 and entry into all the premier events will be intriguing to witness. After a career in the minor leagues for seven years, now Chwalinska has earned her promotion into the major leagues of tennis. Will she become complacent or hungry for more elite success?
But the feeling in the air is it could be Andreeva’s time now and perhaps the beginning of a new era. The smiling but ferocious Andreeva may graduate into a super champion now that she has finally pocketed her first major title – and learning what it takes to achieve such a prestigious and elusive feat.
The key point of the duel was at 33 when Andreeva established her superiority with her heavier and speedier shots deep into the corners. Andreeva won nine games in a row to take a 63 50 lead before a slight lapse which she immediately corrected.
Notes: Andreeva is the youngest RG champ since Monica Seles, who was 16 in 1990. Coached by former Wimbledon champ Conchita Martinez, Andreeva reached the semis in Paris two years ago. This was her fourth RG appearance. Brad Pitt watched the match so now he has seen Grand Slam action at RG, Wimbledon and US Open, with just Melbourne left on his tennis bucket list.
