The Arizona Cardinals sent a moving tribute for franchise legend Larry Fitzgerald. All after the famed wide receiver lost his legendary father Monday Larry Fitzgerald Sr. at age 71.
The team sent a social media post honoring the sports personality who helped raise the beloved Cards star.
“Our deepest condolences to Larry Fitzgerald and his family on the passing of Larry Sr., who spent so much time around the Cardinals and press boxes across the NFL. Our hearts go out to all of you during this incredibly difficult time,” the franchise posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The father spent his entire sports broadcasting career in Minnesota, where he raised his children including Fitzgerald. The future Cardinals wideout even was a ball boy momentarily with the Minnesota Vikings, who Fitzgerald Sr. regularly covered. Even Randy Moss got to know a young Larry Fitzgerald through his dad. All before Moss helped surprise Fitzgerald with his Hall of Fame induction.
The father famously would wear his son’s Cards jersey in the press box. Even despite the strict dress code guidelines for NFL stadiums for working journalists. He even covered Super Bowl XLIII when son guided the Cardinals to their first and only big game appearance, nearly pulling off the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers but falling 27-23.
Santonio Holmes famously caught the final shoe string catch inside the end zone to seal that victory while Fitzgerald finished with seven catches for 127 yards. The Cardinals weren’t the only one who honored Fitzgerald’s father, as the Vikings also followed suit.
